What You’ll Do
Storyful’s newsroom has been working at the intersection of social media, news and technology to help media organisations tell the stories that matter most. As we expand the breadth and depth of our coverage, we are seeking an experienced news journalist to join our editorial team in London.
The ideal candidate will have a track record of finding compelling stories via social media, and of producing original reporting that uses cutting-edge verification and open-source intelligence techniques.
They will be at home in a fast-paced, video-led, breaking news environment, and able to serve a diverse set of media clients. They will be equally capable of working on more in-depth reports and research projects. They will be comfortable working on a range of stories, from conflict zones, to weather events, and politics.
The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, and able to motivate others. They will be comfortable representing the company both publicly and at industry events.
Responsibilities
- Monitoring Storyful’s news feeds for emerging stories and undertaking advanced searches using our proprietary tools to discover original, eyewitness content
- Gathering and verifying UGC images, posts, videos and other content from the social web
- Writing clean, concise and accurate copy for publication on the Storyful Newswire and social platforms
- Maintaining an editorial calendar and discovery sources around the MENA region
- Contacting uploaders and sources involved in stories
- Working closely with newsroom clients and content creators
- Identifying and executing on opportunities for long-form reporting and research projects
- Working to deadlines and targets
- Flexibility to work various shifts as needed, including weekends and unsociable hours
- Actively pitch and develop unique stories that are on brand for Storyful
- Understanding stories that work for Storyful’s clients
- Any other duties set out by editorial management team
- Collaborate with colleagues and other teams on stories
- Conduct interviews over the phone
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Experience in journalism, particularly online or broadcast journalism
- A self-starting journalist who is plugged into current events around the world
- A fluid, natural communicator who has experience writing and editing copy for publication. All finalists will be administered a copy test.
- Expert understanding of social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, TikTok, YouTube, 4chan, Telegram, etc.
- Experience with verification and open-source intelligence (OSINT) techniques and a track record in using them in reporting is an advantage
- Ability to source and verify original content from across the social web
- Excellent computer skills, including basic knowledge of spreadsheets and publishing within content management systems
Preferred Skills & Knowledge
- Fluent Arabic language skills a major advantage, though not essential
- Other foreign-language skills are strongly favoured, but not required
- Video-editing skills are an advantage, but not mandatory
Location: London
Work Arrangement: Hybrid - 3 days per week
