University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit a Band 4 Therapy Support Worker to join our Early Supported Discharge team for Stroke and Neurological patients at Good Hope Hospital.
We are seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic and motivated person with excellent communication skills to enhance our multidisciplinary teamwork and provide an excellent service.
The Early Supported Discharge team provides therapy for stroke and neurological patients who are medically fit and ready for discharge from an acute inpatient setting but require further rehabilitation. ESD supports patients to improve their functional ability and gain better independence to improve quality of life. The stroke and neurology therapy team at Good Hope Hospital is strong and supportive and held in high regard in the hospital. We hope you would like to join an established and effective therapy team.
Main duties, tasks & skills required
The post is shared between two therapy disciplines (Occupational therapy and Physiotherapy) and includes assisting the therapists in assessing and treating stroke and neurological patients predominantly in patient homes. It is essential the post holder has a clean driving licence and own a car. The post also includes therapy documentation, reporting, data inputting to support the service, plus ordering equipment and site visits to facilitate discharge of patients.
The post holder must have excellent communication and IT skills, have an interest in stroke and neurological conditions, a willingness to learn and develop their therapeutic skills. We are committed to continued professional and career development of all staff. The Trust is committed to providing a 7-day therapy service and therefore this role is on a 7-day working rota.

Qualifications
Essential
- Education to GCSE level or equivalent including English and maths at grade C or above
- Able to demonstrate competence in maths and written and spoken English
- Educated to A Level / NVQ 4/ BTEC or equivalent (e.g. NVQ 3 or similar vocational qualification plus experience working in a care setting)
- Care certificate or be willing to work towards this.
Desirable
- Evidence of recent education / personal development related to Healthcare.
- Demonstrated has been proactive with continuing professional development
Experience
Essential
- Comprehensive experience as a therapy support worker, supporting therapists in a relevant clinical setting.
- Comprehensive experience of delivering acute inpatient rehabilitation programmes across a variety of clinical settings with evidence of MDT collaboration and hospital discharge planning
- Can demonstrate an in depth understanding of relevant areas of therapy, the effect of illness/clinical conditions / disability on function and health and basic aims of rehabilitation
- Comprehensive understanding of the role of therapy support worker in the relevant area
- Understanding of confidentiality and data protection in healthcare
Desirable
- Experience of communicating with and motivating patients who may have communication difficulties
- Good understanding of working on Acute hospital wards
- Experience of working in an Acute Health Setting
- Good understanding of working environment -healthcare/NHS/UHB trust/acute care/community as applicable
