Natural Hazards Research Engineer
Contract type: Permanent
Working hours: Full time, flexible working hours
Location: Whilst your base office will be in London, we’ll support you to work flexibly from home (providing a suite of IT equipment), whilst coming together on site to offer face to face support and collaboration on a weekly basis

Salary: Starting from £42,000, depending on experience + excellent benefits
Join EDF as a Natural Hazards Research Engineer and you’ll work collaboratively with other colleagues from the Natural Hazards and Environment team, but also with the wider EDF R&D UK Centre in the development and delivery of research projects for the benefit of EDF Energy, the UK energy sector, and EDF Group.
You’ll be responsible for delivering high quality analytical statistical modelling and projects for internal and external stakeholders based in the UK and abroad and will also ensure coordination with and knowledge transfer from and to EDF Group R&D.
The opportunity…
As a Natural Hazards Research Engineer, you’ll be responsible for carrying out technical and scientific studies on natural hazards characterisation. This role will focus on exploring and developing novel statistical methodologies to understand extreme hazards (wind, rainfall, temperature, waves, surges, storms, etc.) and climate change impacts.
You will collaborate with a diverse team of scientists and engineers and propose new research projects to ensure EDF Energy remain at the forefront of applied scientific development. You will be able to produce and present innovative and relevant research results for the R&D UK Centre in the above discipline to inform key impactful decisions taken regarding the safety of the nuclear power plant fleet and renewables.
The Natural Hazards Research Engineer will interface with external academic partners, public organizations, and internal stakeholders at various levels to ensure relevant information is gathered and presented.
What we’re looking for…
Being a Natural Hazards Research Engineer at EDF means, you’ll have a scientific background ideally at the PhD level or more than 5 years industry experience in a relevant discipline such as statistical science, atmospheric science, meteorology, climate/earth systems science, applied mathematics or similar fields and strong mathematical foundation with particular focus on numerical modelling, statistics, probability, and computational science.
You’ll have experience of working with extreme value analysis, uncertainty quantification and global and regional climate models. The Natural Hazards Research Engineer will have excellent analytical and problem skills paired with the ability to develop creative and efficient solutions. You’ll have the ability to take methodologies from scientific research papers, understand where they should be applied and to apply them to new datasets and applications.
The Natural Hazards Research Engineer will be proficient level in development of statistical analysis tools (R, Python for instance) and have an enthusiasm for scientific and applied research studies. You’ll have a flexible approach to work and be able to deal with stakeholders at all levels. The Natural Hazards Research Engineer will be able to show evidence of delivery of project/research work and how this made an impact and hold excellent organisation and time management skills.
