Position Description

Job Summary: Reporting to the Music Program Director and as a part of the Seattle University Department of Performing Arts & Arts Leadership, this position offers essential musical, artistic and operational support to the Music Program and BA Interdisciplinary Arts in Music degree.

About the Program: Seattle University Music is part of the Performing Arts and Arts Leadership Department in the College of Arts and Sciences, which includes Music, Theater and Arts Leadership. SU Music serves a broad cross-section of students and community members from all disciplines and supports the BA Interdisciplinary Arts in Music degree program with specializations in both vocal and instrumental music. The program encompasses three choral ensembles and a wide range of music courses including music theory, ear training, music history, group piano, world music, chamber music, sound & audio production, and others. Private lessons are offered in voice, guitar, piano and strings. With a vibrant calendar of performances, guest artists and collaborations each year, we are a community of active scholar-artist-teachers committed to providing transformational artistic and educational experiences to the Seattle University community.

Essential Job Functions: The essential functions are divided into two categories: musical and operational.

Duties & Responsibilities:

70% Musical

  • Accompany rehearsals, classes, performances and liturgical events as assigned.

30% Operational

  • Provide effective support to Music program & BA INTA MUSC major, directed by Music Program Director and in collaboration with PAAL Operations Manager, to include but not limited to:
  • Point person to oversee piano donations & care of departmental pianos

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in piano or equivalent professional experience. Must be available to play piano for rehearsals and performances of individual students and ensembles; schedule to be arranged quarterly in coordination with the Music Program Director. Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision – self-directed and self-starting. Comfort working with a wide range of student experience levels, from beginner to advanced.
  • The ideal candidate will demonstrate advanced ability in piano playing, a facility for accompanying other musicians and ensembles. Strong music sight-reading skills are essential. Ability to follow quick transitions within rehearsals. High level of preparation. Demonstrates musicianship, including steady rhythm, strong aural skills and keyboard technique. Advanced rehearsal support, including being with a conductor without delay, giving pitches ahead of being given cues, and anticipating what sections need support and providing it without instruction. Being prepared to play at performance tempo at first rehearsal. Ability to play reduced accompaniment and open score parts interchangeably. Demonstrated ability to lead small and large group sectionals and rehearsals as needed.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to assess quality and condition of campus (or potential donated) pianos and make recommendations about their placement and care. Works with PAAL Operations Manager to schedule tunings, repairs with piano technician.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with MS Word, Outlook. Fluency with Canva and social media post management. Experience supervising task-oriented student workers for short and long-term goals. Background in choral music and/or knowledge of vocal technique, ability to easily transpose, harmonize and improvise a bonus. Demonstrated interpersonal composure and flexibility in dealing with people and schedules.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

Work is performed in a classroom or office setting. Option for flexible/remote administrative work. Minimal local travel to concert sites.

Compensation at a Glance:

Salary Range: $43,495 - $45,000

Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate’s gender or any other protected status.
