Job description
We are seeking a MS SQL and MySQL Database Analyst for the Specification, Creation and Delivery of reports from a variety of Microsoft SQL and MySQL Databases across the wide and varied organisation. You will be working closely with a variety of stakeholders across the business in a timely and accurate manner.
The successful candidate will be responsible for analysing and optimizing database systems, ensuring data accuracy, and providing valuable insights to support an organization's decision-making processes. This role is focused on data analysis, reporting, and database performance improvement.
Location: This is predominately a remote-based role with either weekly or fortnightly travel to our Head Office based in Diss, Norfolk.
Key responsibilities and tasks include:
- Retrieve, analyse, and interpret data from Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL databases to provide actionable insights.
- Develop and maintain reports, dashboards, and data visualizations using reporting tools (e.g., Microsoft Power BI, Reporting Services).
- Ensure data accuracy and consistency by performing data validation, cleansing, and data integrity checks.
- Identify and rectify data anomalies or discrepancies.
- Write and optimize SQL queries to extract data efficiently and improve database performance.
- Collaborate with Database Administrators (DBAs) to fine-tune queries and indexes.
- Assist in database schema design and data modelling efforts.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation of database structures and data dictionaries.
- Monitor database performance and health using various tools and proactively identify areas for improvement.
- Recommend and implement performance-enhancing measures.
- Ensure data security and compliance with relevant regulations (e.g., GDPR) by implementing access controls and encryption where necessary.
- Design and develop Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes to move and transform data between different systems and databases.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, developers, and business analysts, to understand data requirements and deliver insights.
- Document data analysis methodologies, processes, and best practices.
- Provide training and support to end-users on data access and reporting tools.
Key skills required:
- A minimum of three years' experience in a similar role.
- A proven track record in working to strict timescales.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Proven experience as a data analyst or database analyst, with a focus on Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL databases.
- Proficiency in SQL query writing, optimization, and performance tuning.
- Experience with data reporting and visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Reporting Services).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of database design principles and data modelling.
- Understanding of data security and compliance best practices.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Relevant certifications in data analysis or database management are a plus.
- Excellent user engagement, communication and reporting skills, the ability to work with staff at all levels of the organisation to third party organisations.
