Job description
Overview:
Stirling Dynamics is recruiting trainee Modelling, Simulation and Control Engineers to the Simulation, Dynamics and Control team.
Due to expanding project needs, Stirling Dynamics are looking for multiple talented engineers who are looking for new opportunities to develop and grow their skills towards a career in Modelling, Simulation and Control.
The successful engineers will be part of the Modelling, Simulation and Control capability group and will work within a team responsible for the development of complex control algorithms and vehicle and system plant models for next generation marine and aerospace applications. The role offers a unique opportunity to receive targeted training across all aspects of model based design, from mathematical modelling, controller design and tuning, model build and test.
As a Modelling, Simulation and Control engineer you will work on the development of leading edge algorithms and processes, and with the latest tool-sets to support the delivery and integration of the models as part of a wider integrated model set.
Modelling, simulation and control has always been at the core of Stirling Dynamics' capabilities, and we have been at the forefront of developing modelling techniques and model based design activities for over 30 years. Within this role you will have the opportunity to learn from and share with other like minded engineers within Marine and across our Aerospace, eVTOL and cockpit control business areas.
The successful candidate must have a keen interest in modelling and control. The ideal candidate would be a recent graduate or someone who has some years of engineering experience, but would like to change career path towards modelling and control. They will have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work and collaborate within a team of engineers.
This role will be predominantly based in our Bristol office with occasional travel to our clients’ sites as required. As part of our commitment to flexibility, employees can work part of the week from home.
Responsibilities:
The candidate must have a keen interest in mathematical techniques, a willigness to learn and strong interpersonal skills.
Candidates will have the following responsibilities:

This role will be predominantly based in our Bristol office with occasional travel to our clients’ sites as required. As part of our commitment to flexibility, employees can work part of the week from home.
The role will suit a recent graduate or engineer looking to diversify their experience and work within a team responsible for producing models (flight dynamics, flight control, hydraulics, actuation, landing gear, boat models, control algorithms etc.) on multiple and varied projects. Training will be provided, which will focus on mathematical modelling of physical systems as well as a focus on control theory, such as:
Phase/Gain margin- Bode plots
- System stability
- PID tuning
- Control architectures etc
The work involves the development of high-level vehicle models and control, such as flight dynamic/boat models, as well as detailed models of systems and individual equipment. The role provides opportunities to work across all stages of the design cycle from concept phase through to in service queries with root cause analysis and problem solving, giving the candidate a broad range of experience to support them in the development of their career. The role gives a unique opportunity to work on varied projects such as, control systems for commercial jets and submarines, carrying out root cause analysis on helicopter systems, through to the development of designs within the new areas of aircraft electrification and urban air mobility including eVTOLs. The candidate will broaden their wider engineering skills by working in multi-disciplinary teams, engaging with customers, and helping contribute to the internal modelling techniques and processes.
The candidate must have a keen interest in mathematical techniques, a willigness to learn and strong interpersonal skills.
Candidates will have the following responsibilities:
- Work with the technical lead, developing, and adapting models representing the system under investigation
- Carry out modelling analyses
- Author technical documentation, including model description documents and analysis reports
Candidates will ideally be degree qualified (or equivalent), in a related discipline preferably Mathematics, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering or a similar course with high numeracy content.
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
- Confidentiality
- Flexible, can-do approach
- Ability to deal with multiple conflicting requests
- Professional attitude
- Self-motivated to see tasks through to successful completion
Training will be provided but any of the following is beneficial:
- Matlab/Simulink
- Hydro-actuated systems
- Electro-mechanical actuated systems
- Multi-body simulation
- Vehicle dynamics
- Systems engineering
- Control Theory
- Code development
Graduate to 2 years of experience
Benefits:
Competitive Package - £28,000-£35,000 dependent on experience.
We offer a range of benefits to our employees to recognise their efforts. Playing hard is equally as important as working hard, so regular events are held throughout the year which provide an ideal opportunity to mix socially.
