Job Title: MO19 Kennel Assistant - Dog Training Establishment

Salary: £25,803 to £27,735 plus a Shift Disturbance allowance of 12.5% and a Location allowance of £1,721. You will receive £25,803 the band minimum. Progress to the band maximum of £27,735 will be via incremental progression.

MO19 is a complex command providing a dedicated firearms pre-planned and response function across the MPS. The OCU also provides all firearms and Taser training as well as firearms licencing and policy support to the wider organisation.

Within the Metropolitan Police Service, MO19 currently have five dogs all based at the Dog Training Establishment in Keston, Kent

All five are operational working dogs, kennelled overnight when not deployed with their handlers.

Kennel Assistants play an essential role within the Unit. You will be looking after Operational Police Dogs when they are not deployed with their handlers.

The primary role is to look after the health and welfare of all dogs in your care; you will be working as part of a small team where excellent communication skills are essential.

You will be part of a team responsible for the feeding, grooming and exercising of Police Dogs; administrating dog medication as prescribed by the vet; cleaning kennels and surrounding areas; clearing dog excrement from exercise areas and kennels; general housekeeping; accurate completion of daily kennel logs and veterinary treatment.

You will be working shifts, generally between 06:00hrs and 22:00hrs to cover kennel duties 365 days a year. You will be expected to work Bank Holidays including Christmas Day and Boxing Day (depending on how your shift pattern falls each year). There may be occasions when leave is restricted on operational grounds.

Essential For The Role, e.g. qualifications, licenses, languages, training

Essential Criteria:

  • Confidence working independently with large breed Dogs.
  • Confirm physically fit and free from injury that would preclude you from carrying out the described role.
  • Able to commute independently to Dog Training Establishment, Keston (there are no public transport links).
  • Prepared to undergo security vetting to minimum standard CTC/RV
  • Prepared to undergo Continued Professional development (CPD) training in canine husbandry and other relevant qualifications
  • Prepared to work overtime during periods of high demand
  • If not already qualified attend and pass a Kennel Assistant Course
  • Experience of working with animals in a kennel, agricultural or veterinary environment

Desirable Criteria:

  • UK Driving Licence C1/D1 Categories;
  • Currently / Previously Trained in First Aid;
  • Knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and / or Licencing of Activities Involving Animals (England) Regulations 2018

Additional Information

  • Please note that the role is based at the Metropolitan Police Dog Training Establishment, Layhams Road, Keston, Kent, BR2 6AR and there is no direct access to public transport.
  • This is a physical and demanding role and you will be working in sometimes extreme weather conditions. You will need to confirm you are physically fit and free from injury that precludes you or will potentially prevent you from performing this role.
