Job description

This is a great time to consider a role on our Nurse Bank as a Mental Health Nurse and be part of a well-established team at South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust.

We are looking for compassionate, caring and experienced Mental Health Nurses to provide safe, effective and trusted care to our patients within the Paediatric Unit. This role will be working flexibly at our main hospital site at Warwick working predominately on the MacGregor Childrens Ward.

This is a new role within the Trust and with the rise in Mental Health needs it is important we shape our services around the needs of our patients.

Your role will be to act as the key nurse assessing and planning nursing care requirements on a one to one basis. You will be the patient advocate, supporting family members and carers to be as involved as required in the care of the young person.

To work in accordance with SWFT Nursing Strategy and contribute to achieving SWFT strategic objectives.

To work according to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines as a named nurse or key worker for a defined patient and take responsibility for:

Protecting and supporting the health of an individual patient.

Assessment of care and health education needs.

Development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.

Scope and Authority

In conjunction with other health professionals, assess and manage risks identified through assessment of the patient.

To regularly review risk factors and work in conjunction with other health professionals to modify care plans and the environment as appropriate.

To act as the key nurse for allocated working hours.

To ensure that clinical practice is evidenced based and consistent with relevant NICE guidelines and the organisations policies and procedures.

To maintain and update relevant knowledge and skills, maintain a professional portfolio and participate in further training as appropriate, in order to enhance quality of care for patients / residents and carers.

To comply with the SWFT Health and Safety Policies and Protocols in order to contribute to safe working practices.

To protect vulnerable adults / children from internal/external factors and act as a Patient Advocate.

Contribute towards supporting family members and carers to be as involved as required in the care of the young person.

You will be working in a busy environment where there are likely to be frequent interruptions and concentration will be required for assessments.

Clinical Practice

Ensure that each patient has an individual care plan and risk assessment, which takes into account the patient (if appropriate) and their carers views, with regular reviews.

To administer medicine within the guidelines and framework of the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Practice within the defined parameters under the Mental Health Act 1983/2007.

Ensure all clinical documentation is of a high standard and patient notes are maintained and filed in the appropriate way.

Provide a specialised range of clinical interventions and knowledge of evidence-based models of practice relevant to the patients’ needs.

Working autonomously with confidence and competence to provide a specialised and safe service to the patient.

To take appropriate action when working with vulnerable adults and children following guidelines and procedures, liaising with appropriate agencies as required.

Maintain professional standards of practice at all times.

To practice in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional conduct and scope of professional practice and maintain own NMC registration.

Plans own workload.

Communication and Relationship Skills

Communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues and all levels of staff.

Maintain confidentiality at all times, as required by legislation and Trust policy.

Showing empathy, understanding, and professionalism, when communicating with patients, their carers and families. Identifying individual needs and therefore utilising a range of agreed communication mediums, including where there are barriers to understanding.

Professionalism

Ensure records and documentation are maintained, kept confidential, and meets professional NMC guidelines, appropriate Trust standards, and in line with the Data Protection Act.

To act in a professional manner, and as a role model, at all times, leading by example.

Demonstrates a positive and enthusiastic approach to their work in order to maintain high morale and motivation within the department. Promoting a professional and positive working environment.

Maintain and develop own professional knowledge and skills including maintaining current MAPA training.

Works within parameters of own capabilities and is accountable for this.

Health, Safety and Safeguarding

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, as an employee, you must take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and other persons who may be affected by our acts or omissions at work.

All members of staff have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of vulnerable adults, children and young people in all relevant areas of their work. This will include timely attendance at relevant training events compliance with the SWFT Safeguarding Procedures.
