Bancroft Medical Centre is a large GP practice in the market town of Hitchin Hertfordshire. Operating over two sites located across the road from each other.
We currently have a vacancy for a temporary Medical Secretary to join our Medical Secretary team.
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our busy Medical Secretary team. You will provide medical secretary support to the practice GPs, Nurses, and Practice Management team, involving word processing and audio typing skills to prepare patient referrals and medical letters and reports.
Therefore, we need someone with accurate keyboard and IT skills and an understanding of medical terminology. Previous experience as a medical secretary is essential.
The ability to work as a team player as well as on your own, in a busy role and prioritise work when under pressure is essential, as is an understanding of the importance of confidentiality in the workplace and able to follow data protection policies and guidelines.

Essential Skills
- Minimum 1 year Medical Secretary experience, preferably in a GP surgery.
- Computer/keyboard skills, including as minimum 40wpm typing speed and audio typing

Job Type: Temporary, a minimum of 6 months that may extend longer. In office is essential and we regret that we are not able to offer remote working.
Full-time hours: 30 - 37.5 per week, we can be flexible on start times / and patterns and can offer a condensed pattern.
Salary: £12.00 per hour
JOB DESCRIPTION – Medical Secretary
Job Summary:
To provide medical secretary support to the practice GPs, Nurses and Practice Management team, involving word processing and audio typing skills to prepare patient referrals and medical letters and reports

Job responsibilities:
- To provide an efficient audio, copy typing and word processing service for practice GPs and nurses as required. This includes the typing of letters, reports, patient referrals etc., in an accurate and quality manner.
- To make patient referrals using the NHS e-referral system, using and producing Ardens forms to attach to referral as needed.
- To receive incoming and initiate outgoing telephone calls in order to facilitate timely and appropriate communications with others, taking messages and dealing with appropriate patient queries relating to their referral.
- To assist the Practice Management team with administrative duties including updating Practice Policies as required.
- To maintain the computer clinical system (SystmOne) in an accurate and secure manner.
- To establish and maintain filing and administrative systems so that written or computer information is easily accessible and secure.
- To provide cover for members of the secretarial team during periods of sickness and annual leave.
- To frank outgoing post ready for admin staff to take to post-box/post office.
- On a rota basis between team manage the ERS worklist, outstanding referrals, advice and guidance etc.
- Forward consultant communication to GP in a timely manner.
- To assist with other administrative activities within the surgery.
