This is a new and exciting opportunity to join us as part of our growing travel claims team as a medical expert. The role will cover a range of responsibilities including working with internal teams and suppliers to help assess medically related claims. The key focus will be to ensure customers are getting the right level of support if ill abroad whilst helping to develop and build the medical knowledge and understanding of internal claims teams to help in the correct assessment of travel claims. No experience of travel insurance is required but we are looking for a medical professional (nurse).

The claims environment is fast paced, and you will often be required to make quick decisions on quite challenging claims so being comfortable with this and being able to establish the facts of a case quickly to help you do this effectively is important. You will be coming in at an exciting time for the travel claims operation as we are rapidly growing and this role will be key in helping to ensure that on our highest risk claims we have strong controls and oversight to ensure good customer outcomes and effective cost control.

We offer a hybrid way of working with a mix of office and home-based working, but our focus is on ensuring we find someone with the right skills and experience for the role. Therefore, if you are not immediately within the vicinity of our office in Cardiff, we would be open to discussing a balance that works for you between time in the office and home-based working.

Responsbilities:

  • Work with a technical claims tram to handle and oversee large value medical claims that fall outside of the suppliers delegated authority – this will mean being able to review and consider whether a claim should be covered under the policy, if the customer has properly screened medical conditions and make decisions about how a customer should be managed in conjunction with the medical assistance provided
  • Manage out of hours calls for an emergency cases where a claims coverage decision is required (after 5pm and weekends – call volumes are very small but you will need to be available) – this is likely to include high value claims decisions – such as whether to repatriate a customer or not which could cost £000’s so you need to be comfortable making difficult decisions often in pressured and time sensitive circumstances
  • Undertake quality checks and auditing of the suppliers claims handling to ensure all claims are being effectively managed and controlled – this involves reviewing decision making, cost control, ensuring that processes and procedures are being effectively followed, etc – so being comfortable in being able to review, feedback and challenge where required is essential to ensure customers are getting a good service and decision making by suppliers is justified and correct
  • Provide training and coaching to in-house claims teams in relation to medical claims to improve understanding and decision making
  • Stay up to date with relevant qualifications and developments in the treatment of patients including overseas medical care
  • Actively share your knowledge to develop those around you
  • Work closely with other areas of the travel business to provide support in the development of areas such as medical screening of customers

Skills, Experience and Qualifications required:

  • NMC registered
  • Recent experience in an A&E/ICU/Cardiac setting peferred
  • Broad medical knowladge
  • Tenacious, enthusiastic, and motivated
  • Confidence to make fast, clinically sound decisions about patient care as a case develops
  • Registered Nurse with a minimum of 5 years post registration experience at least 2 years within an acute area such as ITU/A&E/CCU or equivalent.
  • Evidence of current registration and revalidation with NMC and membership of the Royal Colleague of Nursing.
  • Willingness to take initiative to solve problems and be able to work with different stakeholders to resolve complex issues

  • We have a Hybrid approach to work remote working, 1-2 days per week in our Cardiff office (or more if you prefer)
  • We will give you everything you need to work comfortably from home
