Job description

Are you an enthusiastic and motivated individual who is professional, reliable, innovative and flexible who would like to join our friendly and hardworking team in our Microbiology laboratory.

You should have an interest in healthcare science, be self-confident and motivated. You must possess a wide range of skills demonstrating good numeracy and literacy, a high standard of verbal and written English, computer, keyboard skills and attention to detail. A degree of physical effort is required and potential applicants must be able to multi-task, work well under pressure and be able to work flexibly.

All new staff appointed to posts at the Trust are subject to a probationary period. This will give the new staff member an opportunity to become familiar with the culture and working environment of the Trust.
1. Performs a range of routine and non-routine healthcare science activities under supervision, e.g. performs standard microbiology tests.
2. To act as a Medical Laboratory Assistant to provide support to the scientific team providing services to patients and clients as an aid to clinic diagnosis.
3. Maintains clinical records in relation to activities carried out.
4. Demonstrate own duties to new or less experienced employees.
5. To work flexibly in reflection of service needs this may include an extended working day and/or participation in delivery of a 24 hour, 7 days per week service.
6. The work of the service brings staff into constant contact with human body fluids, tissues and hazardous chemicals. This may include blood, pus, urine, faeces, and respiratory secretions.
7. Maintain and promote professional image of pathology department.
8. Works as part of the laboratory team.
9. Expected to rotate through various managed units within the Microbiology service.
10. Maybe required to provide emergency cover between the laboratories.
11. Expected to occasionally work under remote supervision of a Registered BMS following defined SOP/protocols and would be expected to refer non routine issues to their supervisor.
