Job description

The post holder will work in the context of the Objectives of the Pathology Directorate and the Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA)/Health Care Scientist in the Department of Cellular Sciences.

The principal duty of the post holder will be to assist with tests and background tasks of the Cellular Sciences Department, which do not require interpretation or the skill and training of a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist. Duties will be carried out following established Standard Operating Procedures, under the supervision of the HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists, and/or the Head of Department.

Additional duties will be undertaken as directed by the Head of Department, in consultation with the post holder.

The post holder will be expected to work in one of the following areas, as directed

  • Archiving, mailing & administration
  • Specimen reception & dissection
  • Histology processing
Rotation between sections is anticipated, but flexibility is expected.

  • To support Biomedical Scientists and Consultant Pathologists in performing tests and background tasks of the Cellular Sciences Department, without interpretation, to the required standards, under supervision by State Registered Biomedical Scientists.
  • To receive, sort, prepare, process and dispatch clinical samples, including tissue embedding and sectioning.
  • To prepare for, attend on, and clean down afterwards, clinical dissection sessions, take notes, and support the pathologist or biomedical scientist as appropriate.
  • To prepare specimen containers and manage their supply to service users.
  • To archive and/or dispose of specimens and preparations in accordance with operating procedures.
  • To provide accurate data entry of patient and process details using computer/database systems

1. Scientific and Technical : • To support Biomedical Scientists and Consultant Pathologists in performing tests and background tasks of the Cellular Sciences Department, without interpretation, to the required standards, under supervision by State Registered Biomedical Scientists.

  • Timely response to telephone enquiries (excluding interpretation of, or release of, results)
  • To plan and organise day to day tasks to ensure accurate and timely discharge of duties.
  • Contribute to, and maintain, high professional standards of the Pathology service.
  • To comply with all Departmental, Directorate, Trust and Statutory policies and Operating Procedures.
  • To ensure safe handling of hazardous and infective materials and waste, according to defined protocols.
  • To ensure equipment is used safely and according to manufacturers guidelines and local Operating Procedures, and that faults and breakdowns are reported to senior staff in a timely fashion.
  • Observe and adhere to all legislation pertaining to the Human Tissue Act.
  • Participate in the application of internal and external quality control measures and audits.
  • Observe confidentiality of patient and intellectual information.
  • Conform to the standards as laid down in the National Occupational Standards for Healthcare Scientists.
Personal
  • To ensure personal compliance with regards to mandatory, professional and personal development according to service needs, to attend annual appraisal and maintain an appropriate up to date knowledge base and complete all mandatory training requirements as directed
  • To communicate with all grades of staff, and work as both an individual and part of a team.
