Role Overview
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Medical Director to join UK Insurance. This role is responsible for providing clinical expertise to shape and ensure the effective delivery of high quality, safe, compliant, and commercially successful healthcare for customers within Bupa UK Insurance enabling them to live longer, healthier, happier lives.
The Medical Director will provide medical leadership and support to the UK Insurance business commercially and operationally to deliver strong and sustainable growth, working within a broader team of Medical Directors within UK Insurance. This role involves working collaboratively with UK Clinical team colleagues to contribute to the development of Bupa UK clinical strategies, ensuring the delivery of safe, high quality and compliant care and services whilst maximising delivery against customer and growth goals and P&L targets.
What you’ll do:
- This is a multifaceted role working across the different elements of the UK Insurance business, including supporting health care management activities dependant on demand and need;
- Involvement in project work, initiatives and ‘business as usual’ activities as dictated by business need;
- Flexibility is a key requirement, and it is expected a significant proportion of the role will be spent supporting the Policy Decisions team:
- Ensuring that new policies reflect best current clinical practice and are based on robust evidence of clinical effectiveness.
- To review, as required, existing policies to ensure that these also reflect best current clinical practice and are based on robust evidence of clinical effectiveness.
- To be an active member of the “on-call medical director” rota reviewing policy queries and escalations.
- The role will also provide support and leadership to health analytics, benefit investigation and healthcare management teams;
- This will include reviewing medical reports, liaising with providers, and supporting the teams in delivering an excellent standard of service to our customers and the wider business;
- You will undertake relationship management with individual consultants and groups of consultants, including addressing general queries, high priority concerns, quality issues, and other areas that may be required from time to time;
- To engage positively and proactively with internal and external stakeholders; the latter may include individual clinicians, professional bodies, regulators, and partner organisations;
- To undertake reviews of and investigations into serious complaints and provide support to the UK Insurance Medical Director and the Clinical Quality and Governance team;
- To delegate for the BG and UK Insurance Medical Director and other members of the clinical leadership team when required;
- When requested attend corporate client meetings and support sales teams at pitches and with tender submissions;
- Be an advocate of Bupa and the private healthcare insurance market in general with the ability and desire to provide thought leadership and strategic direction to the business;
- Provide leadership and support to the CQC regulated clinical nursing teams.
What you’ll bring:
- Medical Doctor with current GMC licence to practice
- Extensive post graduate experience in the healthcare sector
- Broad based clinical experience and strong commercial acumen with excellent influencing and negotiating skills
- Experience of working on projects in complex environments with multiple stakeholders and stakeholder groups
- Significant knowledge of the UK healthcare market, best practice and trends in the delivery of care inside and outside of the UK
- Detailed understanding of regulation affecting healthcare professionals and healthcare facilities in the UK and licensing and evaluation of new treatments and technologies
- Detailed understanding of hospital and consultant private practice and ability to deal confidently with these providers on clinical matters relating to their practice or health care delivery
- Strong background in clinical leadership and a sound understanding of all aspects of clinical governance
- Undertakes regular CPD activities in line with requirements of appraisal and revalidation
- Experienced communicator with the ability to work collaboratively with clinicians and operational staff across all professions
- Ability to manage workload and prioritise effectively
- Able to communicate well at all levels; good interpersonal skills, a desire to grow as a leader and an ability to inspire and motivate others
- Ability to support the clinical quality and governance team in delivering outstanding high quality care to our members.
