Job description

Position Summary

The Patient Service Center (PSC) Medical Assistant serves patients at the front desk registration by collecting patient demographics, lab requisitions, and collecting copayments. The Medical Assistant assists phlebotomists with appropriate documentation to ensure patient specimen collection is accurately completed. The Medical Assistant checks in all patients, schedules appointments, and manages the work queue to ensure all patient results are returned to the referring physician.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Communicates with physician offices to confirm diagnosis codes and fax numbers
  • Ensures proper and complete patient identification on requisitions and specimens
  • Performs administrative/clerical duties necessary for specimen processing, including filing or scanning paperwork, answering phones, processing orders, and assisting the Laboratory Technicians, Lead Laboratory Technicians, and Clinical Laboratory Scientists
  • Enters accurate patient data into Worksite Labs database (i.e., EHR) and LIS System
  • Files and/or retrieves laboratory copies of patient test reports in cabinet files and/or LIMS
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient and laboratory information
  • Works closely with laboratory staff to ensure the timely processing of specimens
  • Makes pertinent observations regarding department needs and offers suggestions
  • Monitors and updates inventory levels and quality assurance in inventory management system (i.e., Quartzy)
  • Demonstrates superior customer service, greeting customers appropriately, showing proper identification, following all relevant Standard Operating Procedures regarding the entry of patients' homes or places of employment, and all required proper personal protective equipment
  • Demonstrates complete understanding and adherence to all healthcare providers' orders
  • Confirms patient identifiers (i.e., name, DOB etc.) on the laboratory requisition forms to specimen collection tubes. labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens as required by each test order.
  • Verifies all test requisitions or computer labels against the order to ensure complete accuracy
  • Stores specimen samples according to the required temperature, places samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, labels items accurately, and follows all procedures as outlined by specific protocols to maintain the integrity of specimens during the delivery process
  • Transports patient specimens to appropriate drop-off locations in a timely and safe manner
  • Drives with another adult person, at the company’s sole discretion, as a part of the organization's quality assurance, quality improvement, or research activities
  • Operates mobile apps and software in accordance with company policies and guidelines
  • Travels to multiple locations (i.e., labs, patient service centers etc.) occasionally

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Superior customer service skills, clear communications skills, and ability to show empathy and respect for patients' privacy and autonomy
  • Excellent patient interaction skills in person, via email or text, and by phone.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently
  • Reliable personal, clean, properly insured vehicle with capability to comfortably accommodate a mobile centrifuge
  • Possess a valid and non-expired driver's license issued in the state of residence.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, ability to work with remote equipment, including but not limited to mobile devices/tablets and applications

Required Education, Experience and Certification

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required
  • At least 6 months of experience is required
  • Valid Medical Assistant Certification issued by local licensing agency

Vaccination Requirements

  • Provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination

Preferred Requirements

  • Previous work experience in hospital or lab setting
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
