HEALTHCARE ASSISTANT REQUIRED FOR A GP SURGERY

Post: Health Care Assistant IN GENERAL PRACTICE

Qualification: HEALTHCARE QUALIFICATION BTEC/ NVQ

Responsible/Accountable to: Doctors, Practice Nurses and Administration Team

Location: Slade Green and Colyers Lane Medical Centre Erith DA8.

JOB SUMMARY

The Health Care Assistant works with direction from Doctors, Practice Nurses and for administration from Practice Manager. The Health Care Assistant will assist in the performance of assigned activities involving direct or indirect care to support patients in the practice or at their home.

Able to work with Vision or EMIS operation systems, GP surgery experience required.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • New patient registration and NHS Health checks.
  • Support patients to adopt health promotion strategies that promote them to live healthily and apply principles of self-care. This will include smoking cessation.
  • Various checks and monitoring. e.g. BP monitoring, Urinalysis, Weight monitoring etc.
  • Assist with childhood and adolescent immunisations maintaining any Child Health and Practice records.
  • Provide lifestyle advice to patients making any necessary referrals within the Practice.
  • Ensure specimens are labelled and bagged ready for collection with the necessary paperwork completed.
  • Ensure clinical waste collection runs smoothly, reporting any problems to the Nurse Team Leader
  • Ensure sharps bins are ready for collection.
  • Restocking/maintenance of equipment
  • Restocking of clinical areas and consulting rooms
  • Participate in the Flu and Covid vaccination programmes (training given)
  • Skilled phlebotomist
  • Process lab samples.
  • Monitor patients conditions by taking temperatures, sat levels, weight, height, pulse
  • Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician.
  • Assisting GPs with minor surgery
  • ECGs
  • Cleaning all clinical areas ensuring continued high standards in infection control
  • Maintain general tidiness and cleanliness of nurses and treatment rooms.
  • Participation in administrative systems in the practice
  • Attend and participate in any Nurse meetings and appropriate practice meetings when required.
  • Spirometry (following training and Covid pandemic restrictions)
  • Any other delegated duties appropriate to the post.

Wound Dressing and General Dressing:

· Stitch/ Suture Removal

· Application of Steri-Strips

· Wound Care

Administrative Duties:

· To ensure that Doctors and Nurses Rooms are stocked

· Sterilisation of instruments where required

· To assist in any audits or other administrative duties in relation to the treatment area as requested

· Chaperone for Doctors and Patients

· Patient’s information leaflets and co-ordinations

· To record treatment and care carried out for the patients in the notes when required and on computer. Records must always be kept up to date and accurate

· To help other staff in the reception when requested by the Practice Managers or other staff

2. Personnel:

· To ensure correct use of equipments and supplies and reporting any deficiencies to Doctor or Practice Manager

· To set you own objectives in conjunction with Practice Nurse and the Doctors

· To attend Practice Meetings

· To work towards maintaining and establishing good relationship with colleagues and other staff

· To be familiar with and comply with Bexley Care Trust’s Policies, Procedures and Guidelines

· To maintain the confidentiality of information relating to patients and the practice and other staff
