Statement of Purpose
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Nursing, Clinical Supervisor and Departmental Registered nurse the medical assistant performs designated nursing/clerical duties that assist in patient care in relation to training and in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Essential Functions, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of medical practice to assist in giving patient care.
- Skill to be competent working with a computer.
- Develops trust and teamwork with staff and patients.
- Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instruction.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Ability to file and maintain patient records.
- Skill to write patient information legibly.
- Knowledge of clinic policy and procedures related to this position.
- Knowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation.
- Skill in operating a computer, telephone, and photocopy machine.
- Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
- Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
- Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments and medications as directed.
- Skill in taking vital signs.
- Ability to communicate clearly.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, staff and the public.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
Required Education and Experience
- Minimum Education: High school graduate or GED equivalent required.
- Graduation from an accredited program for Medical Assistants and proof of certification is required.
- Current CPR certification required.
Preferred Education and Experience
- One year medical assistant experience in an office or clinic setting is preferred.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.

Work Environment
Office environment with controlled temperature.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Travel
Little to no travel is expected for this position. Typical example of travel would be driving to Altura’s various clinic locations.
