We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.

Across these four programmes, we develop stories for media and media opportunities for spokespeople which highlight Wellcome’s work. Our media relations and wider communications are focused on research and policy audiences in key global markets. We manage requests from journalists and work with colleagues to handle corporate communications and reputational issues for Wellcome.
As a Media Officer, you will:
  • Work closely with others in the team and across Wellcome to deliver planned media activity - developing potential media stories linked to our programmes and the research we fund; writing press materials including press releases and quotes; media interviews and briefings.
  • Handle queries from journalists about our work – these could be anything from details about funding awards we’ve made to questions about how Wellcome works.
  • Develop and maintain media contacts, ensuring we keep relevant journalists informed about Wellcome’s work .
  • Take responsibility for media monitoring and keep colleagues up to date with media coverage.

This will mean working with the wider team to reply promptly to enquiries from journalists asking questions across the breadth of Wellcome’s work. In parallel you’ll be talking to colleagues across Wellcome and to those we work with more widely, finding interesting ways to share Wellcome’s work through media.
You will be looking for stories that show the role for science in addressing the most urgent health global health threats we face – and have ideas on how to tell these with impact through media.
