What you will be doing in this role

  • Produce design schemes and proposals in response to specifications. May be under guidance of lead engineers / senior designers or on own.
    • Prepares design specifications, analysis and recommendations for presentation and approval.
    • Analyzes mechanical requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints.
    • Investigates solutions to product or process problems.
    • Consolidates results of mechanical design elements for assigned projects.
    • Conducts investigations involving the origination or modification of material, component or process specifications or requirements.
    • Performs product development activities including drawing board layout and interpretation/implementation of customer specifications and documentation requirements (Solidworks).
  • Mechanical Engineering Calculations, Stress Analysis, Fluid Dynamics (FEA and CFD).
  • Understand the requirement presented in Requests for Quotation – RfQ, Specifications, System Requirements Documents.
  • Support Investigations, solutions and write technical reports and documentation.
  • Assist other less experienced engineers.
  • Provide technical guidance to resolve problems found throughout the product development life cycle to ensure the larger programme schedule are achieved.
  • Assist fellow team members with processes to improve department efficiency and accuracy.
  • Select appropriate materials for a durable, minimum cost product and liaise with Production Engineering to ensure optimum choice of production methods economic manufacture.
  • Choose material forming solutions suitable for the duty and quantity of components to be made
  • Check and approval design drawings for completeness and accuracy
  • Select and source proprietary parts/components that are fit for purpose
  • Follow procedures to meet the requirements of ISO9001and AS9100

  • Candidate should be numerate, literate, hardworking, organised with a methodical approach to their work.
  • Work is performed general supervision.
  • May be responsible for entire projects or processes within job area.
  • May be responsible for providing guidance, coaching and training to other employees within job area. May manage projects at this level with responsibility for the delegation of work and the review of others' work product.

Experience

Essential:

  • 5 to 10 years or more mechanical engineering depending upon qualifactions.
  • Understanding of Systems Engineering Requirements.
  • Aerospace experience, however multiple sector experience also considered.
  • Liaison with Shop Floor / Manufacturing / Operations
  • Mechanisms and pneumatics an advantage.
  • Full life cycle design
  • Mechanical Detailing. (Electrical knowledge an advantage).

Desirable:

  • Electrical/Electronic knowledge, including electrical cabling in extreme environments (aerospace) and electronics packaging.

Essential skills/ knowledge:

  • Good understanding of; Geometric Tolerancing, Stack-Up Analysis, BS8888, limits/fits.
  • Proficient user of Solid Works / Solidworks PDM.
  • Good understanding of Design Office practices, Drawing Issue and Change processes
  • Familiar with the requirements and capabilities of PDM and ERP systems.
  • Ability to resolve challenges quickly and ingeniously
  • Design products with low costs from the outset (DFMA & Design to Cost methodologies)
  • Attention to detail essential.
  • Ability to work to deadlines, prioritise workload appropriately in conjunction with Project Management.
  • Perform work accurately with minimal supervision; Methodical approach to their work.
  • Technical Report writing.
  • Understanding of design requirements to ensure designs meet contracted specifications.
  • Mechanical Engineering Calculations.
  • Understanding of manufacturing and assembly processes utilised in Aerospace.

Education/ qualifications

  • BEng, BSc, MSc, MEng in Mechanical / Aerospace Engineering or similar subject/qualification/level.
  • Professional Membership – Member of IMechE or IET or working towards membership.
