Mechanical Design Engineer within the New Product Development Team

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you'll be responsible for bringing innovative ideas to life through the creation of high-quality 3D CAD models and drawings. You'll work closely with our Mechatronics Engineering Manager to identify opportunities for data collection and energy reduction, while collaborating with external suppliers to develop new product solutions.


Here's what you'll be doing:

  • Producing 3D CAD models and drawings to a high standard, ensuring that designs are fit for purpose, can be manufactured, assembled and meet the needs of the customer

  • Supporting engineering testing activities through assembling test equipment, writing test documentation, liaising with test engineers, and taking a hands-on role in testing

  • Working with the lead engineer and project manager/scrum-master to ensure engineering activities align with the company's lean-agile phase gated development process

  • Investigating opportunities to integrate data collection and data-driven services within existing and future Self Pierce Rivet (SPR) equipment products

  • Identifying and implementing methods to reduce product carbon footprint and energy consumption across the SPR equipment product range

  • Collaborating with external suppliers to develop new product, testing, and manufacturing solutions


In addition to your engineering responsibilities, you'll also:

  • Understand and comply with internal product development processes and standards to maintain compliance with ISO 9001 and IATF 16949

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of internal design standards

  • Attend training courses and actively seek Continual Professional Development activities

  • Work in a professional manner that supports the company's policy for health and safety (including Covid-19 measures), environmental, engineering, lean engineering, and quality control

  • Undertake any other duties as reasonably requested by the company


Here are the essential qualifications and skills you need:

  • Experience working within a professional environment taking product designs from concept to production

  • Formal academic qualification(s) in product design, mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent experience in relevant engineering industries and roles

  • Experience with 3D CAD and spreadsheet packages

  • Ability to plan your workload

  • Comfortable with hands-on activities (e.g., assembling equipment, test rig setup, test activities)

  • Able to understand and interpret engineering data and confidently apply measurement and inspection techniques, as well as Geometric, Dimensioning & Tolerancing (G,D&T) rules

  • Good communication skills and ability to produce high-quality technical reports


Desirable qualifications and skills:

  • Experience with Solid Edge and Teamcenter

  • Worked in an industry supplying machinery for use in high-production environments (e.g., automotive)

  • Knowledge of Industry 4.0 enabling technologies

  • Familiarity with instrumentation, electronic and electrical measurement techniques
