DESCRIPTION
About Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley is a leading global financial services firm providing a wide range of investment banking, securities, investment management and wealth management services.
As a market leader, the talent and passion of our people is critical to our success. Together, we share a common set of values rooted in integrity, excellence, and strong team ethic. We can provide a superior foundation for building a professional career – a place for people to learn, to achieve and grow. A philosophy that balances personal lifestyles, perspectives and needs is an important part of our culture.
Business Background
The Valuation Control Group (VC) is responsible for performing the Independent Price Verification (IPV) which revalues all the firms' positions using independent market data as inputs. In addition to OTC marks this covers computed inputs such as volatility surfaces, interests rate curves and dividends. Each such data set that the firm computes internally must be validated against a third-party source.
There is an increased requirement in this area to standardize work with the trading floor and risk systems which will lead to work in the following areas
- Calibrations of input data, leveraging front office systems wherever possible
- Re-pricing, using front office systems where possible
- Fully systematized workflow
In addition to the IPV, the team is responsible for a number of calculations as mandated by regulators.
The Team
The VC team is part of the Finance Technology team which is distributed globally across London, Budapest and Bangalore. The VC team works very closely with our counterparts in risk systems technology.
The Finance Technology team is a Scala and Java shop. The applications that we develop and manage are either developed in existing risk platforms within the firm or are built ground up, primarily in Scala with occasional Java. We make use of other technologies such as Spark, Hazelcast, and Mongodb. We do behavior and test driven development and follow agile practices.
On the UI side some of our applications are written in WPF and others in TypeScript using Angular applications.
What will you be doing?
We require a highly motivated developer to join our London team. Our London team partners with colleagues in strats, FID technology and IED technology to solve valuation related problems required for market risk control.
The two primary programs that the team is working on are
- Automation of daily IPV
- Enhancing our control environment to meet evolving regulatory requirements
Both programs involve enhancing our risk system platforms and interacting with our market data platform
What we’re looking for:
- Act as a developer within a squad which delivers using scrum methodology
- Enhance FID risks systems by extending and enhancing the existing Scala codebase
- Work with strats to leverage existing market data related solutions. Build new solution, for example to assign a liquidity rating to a position based on the liquidity of the inputs that go into the valuation
Skills that will help you in the role:
Required
- Existing knowledge of Scala, or a willingness to train to use Scala
- Prior knowledge of market risk, demonstrated by experience working with applications which are used for the management of market risk
Desired Skills
- Experience of working with market data
- Experience building reactive UIs
- Experience with distributed compute platforms
