Our Salvage and Marine Operations (SALMO) team is the lead across the Ministry of Defence (MOD) for the provision of marine salvage and emergency response. Our specialists including Master Mariners, Marine Engineers, Naval Architects, Environmental Scientists, ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) Pilots, AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) operators and Divers provide a centre of expertise for subsea activities and marine operations. Our operations are varied and include salvage assistance to damaged surface vessels, location of aircraft on the sea-bottom, survey of WWII wrecks, towage of warships and submarines, emergency response preparedness exercises and underwater engineering support to resolve defects on Navy platforms at home and overseas. This provides the very exciting opportunity for global travel for the successful candidate, with recent deployments including Singapore, Japan and Bahrain.
We will provide you with the necessary training and help you on your journey to becoming an experienced Salvage Shipwright Welder. You will have opportunities to learn and develop your specialist knowledge and will be actively supported in this respect.
Responsibilities for Salvage Shipwright Welder
As a Salvage Shipwright Welder, you will deliver a discrete capability to provide salvage operations, exercises, and outputs in support of SALMO and wider MOD objectives. Your main responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Ensuring that all aspects of fabrication, welding & shipwright equipment is available and sufficient to conduct MSU (Marine Salvage Unit) operations and exercises.
- Qualify as an HSE surface supplied diver within 12 months of appointment.
- Dive to commercial standards and form part of the unit dive team.
- Drive and operate the full range of MSU vehicles and boats and conduct lifting (rigging and slinging) and forklift truck operations.
- Undertake task management and take control of any operation as directed by line management, ensuring that tasks are conducted in a proper manner, in accordance with laid down procedures and policies.
- A requirement to enlist as an RN Sponsored Reserve.
Person specification
To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:
- NVQ Level 3 in Welding/Fabrication or a related discipline or, a similar qualification such as an approved modern apprenticeship in a welding or fabrication trade.
- Full UK Driving License.
- You must be fit to pass and maintain a 2 yearly ENG1 seafarers medical & an annual Diving Medical.
It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
- HSE surface supplied diving qualification.
- Non-Destructive Testing inspection.
- Relevant experience in a marine environment.
This role is subject to SALMO Retained Grade Terms and Conditions and differ from the DE&S (Defence Equipment & Support) standard Terms and Conditions. These are detailed in the SALMO Retained Grade handbook.

Due to the nature of this role, you must meet the following:
- Be fit to pass and maintain a 2 yearly ENG1 seafarers medical (no geographical limitations)
- Annual Dive Medical
- This assignment is open to sole UK nationals only
- Be required to enlist as a Royal Navy Sponsored Reserve
- Be expected to work extended hours as and when required in support of operational commitments
- Be required to live within 60 minutes travelling time of the base to which you are appointed
- Have an in date current UK Driving Licence
- If you have no prior commercial diving experience, you will also be required to undertake a dive aptitude test which will be funded by SALMO
