How this role drives the company forward:
The Manufacturing Manager, Instrument Engineering is responsible for leading a team of Manufacturing Engineers and Technicians in the timely production of high-quality instruments and microfluidic chips. The Manufacturing Manager, Instrument Engineering ensures manufacturing excellence through adherence to ISO 13485 medical device and electrical safety standards. Effective review and organization of processes to manage costs and resources are required. The position requires the ability to work collaboratively with a variety of internal cross-functional teams including R&D Engineering, Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Field Support, Planning, and Purchasing. Strong communication and organizational skills are required to oversee the transfer of new products into the manufacturing workflow, resolve problems, improve processes, and manage inventory. The Manufacturing Manager, Instrument Engineering is expected to use technical knowledge to develop and document manufacturing processes that support the R&D design and ensure the reliability and reproducibility of instruments and products.
The Manufacturing Manager, Instrument Engineering is an on-site role located in San Jose, CA.

In this role, you will drive the company forward by effectively managing the manufacturing process and supporting the staff who execute these processes. Your work and leadership to oversee the team is critical to the success of the company’s products. The quality of the instruments and consumables is a direct reflection of your team’s ability to assemble instruments that are reproducible, meeting the high-level quality criteria expected of customers. The Manufacturing Manager, Instrument Engineering has excellent judgment and ability to troubleshoot issues quickly and effectively will help avoid interruptions in customers’ workflow which could one day lead to exciting scientific breakthroughs.
What will you do:
- Responsible for managing engineering personnel who process microfluidic chips for robotic printing or assemble, test, and package multi-sample instruments, automated liquid handlers, imaging systems, and real-time thermocyclers.
- Responsible for managing the development, improvement, implementation, and maintenance of methods and processes related to all systems manufacturing functions.
- Develops team members through coaching, process training, team building, and accountability.
- Able to interpret and follow engineering drawings and manufacture SOPs to ensure procedures are documented effectively and ERP system is accurate. Writes and implements SOPs and test records as necessary.
- Ensures the effective use of materials, equipment, and personnel in producing quality products at minimum cost.
- Analyzes and interprets system test data for pass/fail results.
- Recognizes improvements and initiates ECNs where changes may be beneficial. Collaborates with R&D Engineers on improvements for performance, reliability, and cost reductions.
- Works closely with the Field Support Engineers when troubleshooting customer inquiries or issues in the field. As necessary, schedules self and team for on-call rotation to support FSE staff that are in the field.
- Ensures engineers maintain accurate batch and test records to comply with regulatory requirements, good manufacturing practices, and standard operating procedures.
- Prioritizes production schedules based on new product introduction, stock demands, efficiency, and material supply.
- Works with Operations to maintain optimum safety stock for all components, including spare parts and assemblies. Maintains inventory accuracy and integrity. Works with vendors to source new equipment/materials.
- Plays an active role in coordinating the transfer of new products from R&D Engineers to Manufacturing.
- Monitors maintenance of systems manufacturing equipment and ensures a safe working environment.
- Helps develop, monitor, and control the department’s budget and manage expenses.
- Carries out personnel management responsibilities for manufacturing staff and performs annual performance reviews.
- This position has supervisory responsibilities.
How will you get here?
- BS/MS degree in a technical discipline in engineering. Life science degree with prior relevant experience also considered.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience managing an engineering team.
- Previous experience with microfluidics instrument manufacturing is required.
- Proficient in using Excel and SOLIDWORKS. ERP experience in Oracle, SAP, or equivalent system is required.
- Demonstrated aptitude to manage the work of others.
- Experience with new product introduction preferred.
- Experience working in an ISO 13485 regulated environment preferred.

Salary Range: $140k - $150k Depending On Experience. This base salary does not include additional bonus compensation and benefits.
