The Centre for Engineering Innovation and Research (CEIR) at the University of Wolverhampton is seeking to appoint a Research Commercialisation Manager (RCM) in Additive Manufacturing (AM).
The Centre for Engineering Innovation and Research (CEIR) at the University of Wolverhampton is seeking to appoint a Research Commercialisation Manager (RCM) in Additive Manufacturing (AM). The CEIR's AM research group has been conducting pioneering research in novel materials and processes that can solve material and structural challenges in enabling sustainable manufacturing for a green and circular economy. The AM-RCM will focus on generating a sustainable income for the research centre through research grants and commercialisation activities, while also cultivating a world-class research commercialisation environment by encouraging commercial and entrepreneurial thinking and activities.
Purpose
The AM-RCM will lead the growth of CEIR's research commercialisation activities by identifying and prioritising high-impact commercial opportunities in AM, successfully creating, managing, and executing commercialisation activities, fostering and developing key stakeholder relationships, and exploiting university assets to develop new opportunities. The AM-RCM will work closely with CEIR academics, businesses, and entrepreneurs to build on the AM expertise, technologies, and techniques that have the potential for significant commercial impact. The role will be accountable for the progression of their projects to the conclusion, ensuring all aspects of the commercialisation are addressed as outlined in the project planning.
The AM-RCM will be responsible for generating a sustainable income for the research centre. Post REF2027, the post will be fully funded and justified by the income generated through research grants and commercialisation activities. The AM-RCM will also be responsible for identifying and securing funding opportunities through UKRI, IUK and/or Horizon Europe funding calls. The AM-RCM is expected to generate a sustained annual income from AM licensing, consultancy research commercialisation, short courses, and spinoffs.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Exploit opportunities in AM research to develop collaborative research grants.
- Identify and prioritise high impact commercial opportunities in AM.
- Successfully create, manage, and execute commercialisation activities.
- Foster and develop key stakeholder relationships with a view to using University assets to develop new opportunities.
- Lead the growth of CEIR research commercialisation through funding applications and industry collaborations.
- Evaluate, prioritise, and develop specific commercialisation strategies for the best exploitation of AM research including various proof-of concept demonstrators to be advertised.
- Disseminate the AM research through patents, journals and presentations.
- Ensure resources are available to deliver on promised outcomes in a timely fashion.
- Contribute to building effective partnerships between CEIR academics and industry to provide engineering students with cutting edge research-led teaching, industrial placement opportunities, and employability, further enhancing the Wolverhampton offering.
- Manage the KTP project including maintenance of project plans, and organization of project-related meetings.
- Establish the appropriate case for exploiting specific research results and deliver the agreed commercialisation strategy with a range of relevant resources.
- Manage CIER’s commercial portfolio and key stakeholder relationships.
- Develop short courses for online, offline and residential delivery.
- Leverage networks to bring together businesses, entrepreneurs, and partner universities with academics and researchers to identify and deliver high impact AM commercial opportunities.
