Job description
We are looking for two individuals for our Manual Machining Apprenticeship, in which we will be training these individuals on how to machine a wide variety of materials with a wide variety of machines. The program takes 4-5 years, but by the end, you will receive a certificate from the State of California and the US Department of Labor stating that you have completed this apprenticeship and are a qualified machinist. Whether you stay with M.A.R.'s Engineering or not individuals with this certificate typically make a minimum of $30/hr. Our program is being run through the CTMAA and will require 8000 hours of paid on-the-job training and 576 hours of classes/at-home training. All classes and class materials will be paired for, all that is expected of the apprentice to show up to class and learn. Each individual will have to complete a 3-month introductory period in which commitment and work ethic will be evaluated before registration into the Apprenticeship program.
Experience with machinery such as Lathe, Mills, Grinders, Ect.. is greatly welcome however is not required. We are mostly looking for an individual that is mechanically inclined and has a history of commitment/staying with past companies for longer than 4 years.
Responsibilities taught/expected:
- Review samples, drawings or instructions to understand the specifications of output
- Plan the sequence of necessary actions for the completion of a job
- Take measurements and mark material for cutting or shaping
- Select appropriate machines (e.g. lathes) and position or load material for a job
- Determine and program size of batches, speed of machine etc.
- Monitor machine while working to adjust the feed, maintain temperature and identify issues
- Check output to ensure consistency with specifications and discard defects
- Keep records of approved and defective units or final products
- Perform routine machine maintenance and repair minor damages
Skills Taught/Expected:
- Experience as machinist
- Ability to use precision tools (e.g. calipers) to take accurate measurements
- Knowledge of the properties of metal and other material
- Ability to read blueprints, schematics and manuals
- Good at math with analytical abilities
