About the role
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Civil Society and Volunteering team (within the Civil Society and Sport Unit) as Manager for Major Events and Resilience Volunteering. The role requires senior level stakeholder relationship management. You’ll provide leadership of the mayor’s work around volunteering for major sporting and cultural events, and for resilience (in response to crisis).
You’ll oversee the recruitment, retention and equity of volunteers and volunteer experience for Mayoral volunteering programmes and provide leadership on volunteering management good practice, both in major events volunteering and beyond.
You’ll support bids for London to be a host city for Major sporting events and design appropriate volunteering programmes to ensure Mayoral opportunities are accessible, removing barriers and leading the way in good practice.
The role involves guiding and supporting the next phase of our important work on promoting good practice in equity, diversity, and inclusion in volunteering for Mayoral programmes and with the wider sector.
You’ll line manage a team of four staff, providing learning and development support to ensure successful performance of both individual team members and the team as a whole.
Also, co-ordinating the delivery of the team’s objectives through cross-organisational working with other GLA teams, as well as with the wider stakeholder base.
This role requires weekend and evening working on a frequent basis for short periods of time.
Principal Accountabilities
- Provide leadership and oversight of the Mayor’s work around major events and resilience volunteering. This will include directing the scoping and development of future ambitions of the Mayor and his advisers and the wider Civil Society and Sport Unit, including future programme design and shape, collaboration and partnership working with others, and work to ensure that aims and objectives around the Building Strong Communities mission are met and satisfied.
- Design and deliver (where appropriate) volunteer programmes to support the role of London as host city for major events, ensuring that programme support is provided in the most effective and appropriate way to ensure that volunteer experience is positive and that the programme supports and enhances the Mayor’s role in providing host city operations.
- Build on resilience work begun during the pandemic, working closely with specialist teams in other GLA directorates, external partners in the resilience and major events volunteering sector, with community groups and the third sector.
- Preside over work around the role of the Mayor to encourage and support inclusive volunteering practice and good volunteering practice across London, working in partnership with regional and local organisations to ensure high quality and accessible volunteering opportunities.
- Effectively lead, motivate, and manage a team of four direct report staff delivering major events, volunteering good management and practice and resilience work to ensure successful performance and cost-effective allocation of resources in accordance with the Authority’s policies and Code of Ethics and Standards.
- Establish, maintain, and manage strong working relationships with senior level stakeholders within and outside the GLA by engaging with a wide variety of people from public and private organisations across the sector, and represent the GLA in a variety of forums, to ensure opportunities for integration and inter-disciplinary working are realised.
- Oversee, quality assure, coordinate, and contribute to advice, written and oral, to the Mayor and their staff, senior managers, Members of the Assembly, and Functional Bodies, GLA staff, government departments, London-based and national organisations on volunteering-related matters, making recommendations on policy and strategy options.
- Maintain an up-to-date awareness of any relevant legislative, technical and policy changes in the area covered by the team’s responsibilities.
- Gather and evaluate relevant data and evidence to ensure that strategy, policy, projects, and programmes are developed with a solid evidence base and are capable of evaluation.
- Realise the benefits of London’s diversity by promoting and enabling equality of opportunities and promoting the diverse needs and aspirations of London’s communities. particularly in the context of the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on some of those communities.

Person Specification
Technical requirements/experience/qualifications
- Experience in the field of major events, resilience volunteering and deployment of diverse volunteers, or staff, at scale, knowledge and experience of working with major events organisers, resilience structures, digital volunteering platforms and voluntary and community sector networks is highly desirable.
- A track record of developing and managing programmes and teams successfully and delivering results on target and within budget.
- Evidence of success in undertaking project-based work and preparing clear and concise reports, presentations, and briefings on complex and sensitive issues for a range of different audiences.

Additional Information
This role is based at London Fire Brigade’s Head Office (Union Street SE1 0LL).
GLA staff are hybrid working up to 3 days a week in our offices and remotely depending on their role. As part of this, you will need to split your time between home working and coming into the office.
