Next Step Independence supports children and young people aged 8-18 who, for whatever reason, are unable to live at home with their families. We achieve this through a range of semi-independent supported accommodation and Registered Children’s Homes.
This role is based within the Estates Team of Next Step Independence Ltd and offers plenty of variety with a range of tasks to make sure our properties and grounds are at their best all day, every day. Next Step Independence will provide use of a vehicle for this role or pay a mileage allowance. Although the head office is based in Taunton, the job entails travel mostly around the Southwest of England - the ideal candidate will be based near Bristol/Wiltshire off the M4 for homes around Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Bristol, N. Somerset.
Essential and Desirable Skills:
- Experienced in all types of property and grounds maintenance (including painting and decorating) in both indoor and outdoor environments (E)
- Experienced/qualified in electrical installations, carpentry, build or plumbing (D)
- Skilled at DIY & general property and grounds maintenance (E)
- Experience of grounds / garden maintenance (D)
- PAT testing qualification or willingness to train (D)
- Knowledge of MS Office 365 / Word / Excel (D)
- A thorough understanding of Health and Safety (D)
- Able to manage and lift heavy equipment/machinery and work at heights (E)
- Willing to travel around Southwest England and at times UK & hold a full valid driving licence (E)
- Willing to learn new things / continued development and training (E)
- Able to communicate at all levels & record detailed, accurate maintenance information (E)
- Friendly, conscientious & an excellent team member with a positive attitude (E)
Your duties will include:
- Working to daily and weekly schedules of maintenance, both inside and external areas
- Always considering the health and safety of yourself, those around you and ensuring your equipment and tools are kept secure
- Ensuring that our homes, the grounds and surrounding environment are maintained to a safe and satisfactory standard that our children and young people deserve

- You will have excellent knowledge and experience of property maintenance.
- You are a patient, caring person with a genuine interest in our ethos.
- You are reliable and ready to turn your hand to a range of tasks all focused on keeping the children and young people’s homes maintained to the highest standards.
- You have a full clean driver’s licence.
An enhanced DBS check will be required to work in children’s services.
Own van plus travel expenses or use of pool van.
