Senior Software Engineer (Mainframe Centre of Excellence)
Location: Remote Working/ Skelmersdale
Salary: £48,000-£60,000
35 hours, full time

Role Details: As a permanent Senior Software Engineer in the Mainframe Centre of Excellence Build Team, you will be working at the heart of our core banking platform. You will be designing, building and supporting applications that underpin our Retail and SME customer products, as well as functionality that is fundamental to the running of the Bank, such as our payments engine. You’ll be able to accurately analyse existing system behaviour, perform gap analysis and prepare detailed application design documents and program specifications for the Development team. Alongside tried and trusted coding methods you’ll also be working with some of the latest integration technologies which support our Digital and Online customer channels. Key Accountabilities:
- Working with logical solution design architects – collaborating on design, engineering and build capability for Mainframe IT solutions across the enterprise
- Providing technical analysis and design of software changes for applications on the Mainframe (through the design, build and unit test phases of the SDLC)
- Develop a good technical understanding of applications running on the Mainframe, in order to provide subject matter support and guidance for technical queries
- Able to provide oversight and quality assurance for the work of colleagues such as solutions designers, developers and support analysts (including in-house Bank staff and third party vendors)
- Strong communicator, able to effectively articulate ideas in words as well as write clearly & concisely (transforming business concepts into technical specifications)
- Following traditional SDLC / ITIL principles and maintaining formal change control processes.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:
- Solid experience in IBM Mainframe development (COBOL/CICS), ideally within Banking or Financial Services environment
- Experience in leading others and working with 3rd parties in order to achieve timely and quality software change and solution design to compliment business objectives
- Ability and confidence to effectively challenge others constructively, where necessary
- Excellent at problem solving and workload prioritisation
* Understanding of mainframe integration patterns with other technologies and systems and the ability to both understand technical code and processes both as workflow diagram and to conceptualise it as a solution. Knowledge of z/OS Connect & RESTful API integration would be an advantage (*but not essential)
- Experience in mentoring and instructing individuals on development and delivery disciplines and / or support and incident resolution disciplines would be an advantage
- Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present technical details to a non-technical audience
- A self-starter who can deliver high quality work and adapt to new challenges, either on their own and as part of a wider team.
