What you offer?
Reporting to the Neighbourhood Day Camp Coordinator, Camp Counsellors implement and facilitate the delivery of quality recreational programs, services, and experiences to children and youth aged 4 to 16 enrolled in Neighbourhood Day Camp programs. The NDC Summer Camp Counsellor functions as part of a team tasked with supervising program participants as they engage in outdoor activities, discover nature and enjoy the natural environment, build self-confidence and establish lasting friendships.
This position requires a commitment to the Y mission and core values of responsibility, honesty, caring, and respect, which form the foundation of all Y programs and services.
Positions available at various locations across the city such as:
- Ottawa Center
- Ottawa-West-Nepean
- Nepean
- Clarence-Rockland
- Ottawa South
- Orleans
- Ottawa-Vanier
- Kanata
Some of the tasks of this position include:
- Lead and participate in all programs and actively swim each day with the campers. Delivering programming based on skill level, and age of participants. Staff will be required to swim or be in pools with the participants.
- Actively supervise assigned camper(s), learning their name(s) on the first day and knowing their whereabouts at all times. Act as a positive role model in attitude, health, and wellness for campers, volunteers, and staff.
- Complete all necessary paperwork accurately and in a timely manner (site checks, program paperwork, incident reports, pre-camp phone calls, staff meetings, and parent feedback).
- Responsible for the safety, supervision, and security of all participants in your care at all times following the YMCA Policies and Procedures. Expected to check in with Camp Management if they feel that an activity is unsafe due to equipment, weather, etc.
- To participate with the children in a positive and supportive manner using the Healthy Childhood Development frameworks.
- Demonstrate strong support and commitment to the mission and core values of the YMCA of the National Capital Region and Y Canada.
- Position is flexible in nature and the individual may be asked to act as a roving counsellor supporting and subbing in for different Camp Counsellors. This includes but is not limited to program facilitation and support with behaviour management.
- Develop and maintain an open, constructive, and professional relationship with program participants, caregivers, volunteers, co-workers, and supervisors.

The successful candidate will have the following:
Education
- Post-secondary education or equivalent in a related field
Language
- Fluent in English, oral and written
- Bilingualism an asset
Experience, Skills, and Abilities
- 3-4 years experience working in an outdoor education or camping environment, with 1-2 years experience in management
- Standard First Aid and CPR “C” certification
- Sound knowledge of child development
- Sound knowledge and understanding of camping programs and team management
- Previous experience in the development and implementation of new programs and services
- Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds including visible and invisible dimensions of diversity
- Flexible to work days, evenings, and weekends
