We are delighted to have the opportunity to offer the position of a Locum Consultant Urologist post for a period of 1 year. There will be the opportunity to apply for a substantive Consultant post as we are planning to expand and redesign our existing Consultant Urology team. We are looking for a motivated and skilled individual to join our busy, friendly and innovative department. Excellent communication and team working is essential.

We are seeking to recruit one, full time, Locum Consultant Urologists to commence as soon as possible, however part-time applications and job shares would be welcomed. The successful candidates will assist in providing a comprehensive general and specialised urology service for the population of South Devon. We have close links, excellent working relationships and established pathways with the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital, who are the regional Pelvic Cancer Centre. There is an opportunity for cross site working for suitably skilled candidates.

We are also looking to expand our paediatric urology service across both Torbay and the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital, and a special interest in this would be welcomed. Both hospitals are a short distance apart served by excellent road links.

The department would also welcome candidates with a sub-specialist interest in:

  • Paediatric urology
  • Functional urology
  • endourology and stone surgery
  • Bladder outlet obstruction with HOLEP experience
Other sub-specialist interests will be considered.

The ability to communicate and work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team is vital. It is also anticipated that the successful candidates would contribute to increasing the national profile of the department.

The successful candidate, together with the urological consultants will be expected to provide a 1:5 weekly on-call service with consultant led ward rounds on Saturday and Sunday. Regional weekend on call cover is planned to re-start later this year (2023). This will be a 1:11/12 rota shared with the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital.

The Urology Department has a strong teaching and training commitment with the 2 local medical schools (Plymouth Medical School and University of Exeter Medical School).

We have a well-established Urology Department, currently consisting of 3 full time Consultants, 1 part time Consultant post,1 Locum Consultant , 1 x Specialist Registrar and 1 Urology Fellow, 1 Core Trainee, 2 x F2 trainee and 1 F1 trainee. The department is supported by 4 x Urology CNS’, 6 Urology Nurse Practitioners and 4 HCAs.

The modern Urology Investigation Unit is based in Paignton Hospital and is due to be expanded further to support an extended range of outpatient treatments and procedures.

The hospital has a dedicated IR theatre with excellent support via our interventional Radiologists. Our Day Case Unit is currently rated as one of the best in the UK and urology in Torbay has the highest number of day case TURBTs in the country. The consultant team enjoys excellent working relationships with the general surgical consultant body.

Outside of work, the South West is a great place to live whether you are looking to Dartmoor for walking and exploring the Tors, the local coast for water-sports or even a little bit further afield for a spot of surfing? With Exeter and Plymouth being within easy reach there is a wide range of diverse places on your doorstep for you to enjoy. There is excellent local education provision with 2 grammar schools and excellent universities in both Plymouth and Exeter. With recently upgraded road and public transport links, the South West is easily accessible to all.
