Main duties of the job

Expertise in reporting PET-CT is essential and SPECT-CT is strongly desirable.

  • Competently interpret and report PET-CT studies independently.
  • Competently interpret and report general nuclear medicine and SPECT-CT studies independently.
  • Be able to effectively present imaging and discuss patients at MDTs.
  • The post-holder will be expected to take part in appropriate accreditation activities including External Quality Assurance Schemes and also participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities. The Trust will ensure that time and support are available to allow every consultant to comply with the Royal College of Radiologists/Royal College of Physicians annual requirements for C.P.D.

The post holder will provide professional clinical advice to other members of the nuclear medicine department, referring clinicians and hospital management and will attend relevant departmental meetings to ensure safe and effective services.

The post will be initially be based at the Royal Free Hampstead site, supporting and developing the nuclear medicine service to ensure a high quality of care for the patients across the Royal Free Group Hospitals. However, the successful candidate may be expected to contribute to cross-site working between The Royal Free, Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals if the need arises. Sessions working from home are also an option.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a full time NHS appointment attracting 10 PAs. Cover for annual, study and professional leave is covered by other consultant colleagues. Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for part-time working; appropriate modification of the job content should, however, be discussed and agreed with the Divisional Director in consultation with the Clinical Director of Imaging and Nuclear Medicine Service Line Leads prior to accepting any appointment that might be offered.


RESPONSIBILITIES & DETAILS OF THE POST

  • Competently interpret and report PET-CT studies independently.
  • Competently interpret and report general nuclear medicine and SPECT-CT studies independently.
  • Be able to effectively represent patients and present scans at MDTs.
  • The post-holder will be expected to take part in appropriate accreditation activities including External Quality Assurance Schemes and also participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities. The Trust will ensure that time and support are available to allow every consultant to comply with the Royal College of Radiologists/Royal College of Physicians annual requirements for C.P.D.
  • Support infection prevention & control and antimicrobial stewardship activities.
  • Participate in the supervision and training of specialty trainees and clinical scientists, teaching of other junior trainees, medical students and hospital staff as appropriate.
  • Participate in the undergraduate teaching programme.
  • Participate in clinical audit.
  • Participate in service development and policy review.
  • Participate in CPD and quality assurance activity including annual appraisal and revalidation.
  • Share in the assessment and introduction of new techniques and in planning staff and equipment requirements.

Education & professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • On the specialist register of the General Medical Council (GMC) for radiology or nuclear medicine; or Registered with the GMC and within 6 months (at the scheduled time of the advisory appointments committee) of being accepted for the specialist register
  • Fellowship of Royal College of Radiology or Fellowship / Membership of Royal College of Physicians or equivalen
  • At least one year of subspecialty (nuclear medicine) training
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate medical degree

Skills and aptitudes

  • Member of Medical Defence organisation

Experience / Knowledge

  • Excellent knowledge of general nuclear medicine
  • Evidence of knowledge of basic science of nuclear medicine
  • Excellent clinical skills in nuclear medicine
  • A record of regularly presenting cases and discussing imaging at multidisciplinary meetings
  • Good teaching skills and ability to supervise the clinical work of doctors in training and other staff
  • Evidence of research in the field
  • Strong oral and written communications skills in English
  • Ability to work well within a diverse multidisciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the environment in which the service needs to be delivered
  • Experience in hybrid imaging, including complex studies
  • Experience in reporting DEXA
  • Experience of developing or leading a service
  • Confident in performing and reporting nuclear cardiology studies
  • Ability to report diagnostic CT and MRI
