Job description
This is a full-time junior doctor role working in a Mental Health Liaison Team servicing The Royal Bolton Hospital.
You will work with a multi-disciplinary team including 2 Consultant Psychiatrists and specialty doctor (currently vacant) within this service.
The postholder would be expected to see patients age 16 and over referred to the MHLT under supervision. This would include history taking, formulation, risk assessment, liaising with medical/surgical specialties and devising management plans.
The case load includes emergency psychiatric presentations (e.g. self-harm, psychosis, behaviours that challenge in dementia) as well as dealing with the interface between medical and psychiatric symptoms.
Job Responsibilities:
Clinical Roles:
- Clerking new patients
- Assessing and managing physical health conditions of the patients on the ward
- Completing regular mental state examinations and risk assessments for admitted patients
- Liaison with external agencies such as GPs and acute medical staff
- Attending ward rounds and documentation of ward rounds
- Completing discharge summaries and discharge prescriptions
- Be involved in clinical governance related activities such as audits and quality improvement projects.
- Provide teaching to medical students and doctors in training working in the Trust

It is expected that the post holder will:
- Assessments of patient presenting in emergencies (e.g., self-harm, psychosis, behaviours that challenge in dementia) – history, mental state, risk and formulation of management plan.
- Assessments of patients presenting with cognitive impairment (e.g., delirium and suspected dementia) including cognitive examinations and liaising with the wider MDT.
- Assessments of psychiatric symptoms presenting in medical/surgical inpatients and providing management advice to the inpatient teams.
- Liaising with medical MDTs.
- To attend MDT meetings.
- Undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients.
- Record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively in a timely manner to our electronic patient notes.
- Attend and participate in the academic programme of the Trust, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD programme.
- Maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council and to abide by professional codes of conduct.
- Participate annually in a job planning and appraisal with the Consultant.
