The Bodleian Libraries are seeking to appoint a Library Assistant to join the East Asian Section. The East Asian Section is responsible for providing curatorial, subject and reader support in Chinese, Japanese and Korean studies and consists of KB Chen China Centre Library and Bodleian Japanese Library.
As a Library Assistant in our iconic KB Chen China Centre Library and Japanese Library, you will welcome readers and visitors and administer the Library’s admissions procedures, respond to enquiries and provide direction to appropriate services. You will undertake a range of duties on front line desks, at all times providing high quality customer service. You will also be expected to complete tasks under general direction and to manage and prioritise your own workload on a day to day basis.
You will provide general support and answer queries from students and staff specialising primarily in Chinese studies and be able to communicate clearly and effectively with a diverse reader community. You will work collaboratively as part of a small and diverse team of staff responsible for delivering high quality reader services to users and work flexibly and creatively across the site libraries. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual to gain a wide-ranging experience in a busy and stimulating library environment.
This is a permanent, part-time position, working 14.6 hours per week over two full days.
This role requires lifting and carrying boxes of library materials, pushing trolleys, climbing ladders and kick-stools in order to access some of the library’s bookshelves and to re-shelve materials. As a member of a small team, you may be required work alone from time to time. You may be required to work some evening and weekend shifts as required, and work at other Bodleian Library locations from time to time.
