We are currently recruiting for a Legal Counsel to join the Lendlease Construction business. This is an opportunity for a strategic thinking construction lawyer to join a growing legal team supporting the European Construction and Consulting business at a top global construction, property and real estate firm.
The Legal Counsel will support some of the most significant construction projects across the UK including Google’s new European HQ in Kings Cross, the refurbishment of landmark heritage buildings at the Houses of Parliament and Manchester Town Hall, and some of the largest urban regeneration projects in Europe including the Silvertown Development, Elephant Park, Perry Barr Birmingham and The International Quarter London.
Accountabilities
  • To provide legal support on proposed construction and consulting projects including the review and negotiation of main contract terms and consultant appointments (based on JCT/NEC/PPC2000 standard forms as well as framework arrangements), stepping down of terms into sub-contracts and consultant appointments
  • To provide legal support covering a range of issues on active construction projects
  • Analyse, review, evaluate and research risks, and develop and implement alternative solutions
  • Maintain current knowledge on legal developments, disseminating updates to business units
  • Provide support, including management/coordination with external law firms, on contentious matters including dispute resolution via mediation/adjudication/arbitration/litigation
  • To assist in managing and updating all precedent documents for the construction and consulting business
  • To support the Head of Legal in people manager and team matters including supervision of legal team trainee and legal team training - this is not a people manager role
  • Supporting our development and investment management business with construction elements of developments
  • To provide general commercial legal advice to the business
  • Produce, analyse, interpret, implement, and update the Lendlease legal and risk policies, procedures and databases and prepare, review and provide legal documents and reports to track legal issues, recommend corrective actions and maintain timely information in compliance with requirements of Governmental agencies, laws, statutes, rules and regulations
Skills, knowledge & experience
  • Qualified as a solicitor or equivalent in other common law jurisdiction with strong academic background
  • Legal practising certificate
  • In depth experience of construction including work for contractors, consultants, and employers
  • Experience in major construction projects, urban regeneration projects, apartment projects, commercial (office and industrial) projects, retail property projects and heritage projects
  • Contract review and negotiation skills of JCT Design and Building and NEC3/4 forms of contract
  • Experience of working with the commercial and project teams
  • Strong business acumen and project management skills
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Knowledge of developer/funder documentation
  • Knowledge of dispute work
  • Minimum 6 years (for qualified lawyers) post admission experience preferably in a major law firm and/or as in-house counsel
  • In-house experience/aptitude to work in-house
  • Experience or understanding of new methods of construction matters is an advantage
  • Experience in relevant ancillary legal areas including, development, real estate finance, litigation, insurance, insolvency. product liability, technology
  • Contract review and negotiation skills of other forms of contract including management contracts, construction management agreements and PPC2000 form
