Legal Counsel (Construction) Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C Nuclear New Build Projects

Are you looking for a legal career which is rewarding, at the cutting edge of project development and where you can really make a difference? If so, come and join EDF’s EPR Programme legal team!

The Opportunity

The EPR Programme unites two of the most exciting projects in the UK, Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C, whilst being at the forefront of the UK’s climate change agenda and energy policy. Working with industry leading advisors, negotiating directly with key suppliers, and interfacing with key stakeholders, including HMG and investors, this is an exciting role offering an opportunity to own and manage crucial workstreams with a particular specialism in construction and supply chain contracts.

Pay, benefits and culture

Alongside a competitive salary and a market-leading pension scheme, we offer a range of flexible benefits to support our people across all aspects of their lives.

Your rewards package includes a choice of benefits, such as electric vehicle leasing, enhanced parental leave, health insurance, discounts, and employee pricing.

The EPR Programme Legal Team are based in either our London or Bristol office, with flexibility on a weekly basis to work from home. Flexible working means we’ll provide a suite of IT equipment to ensure that you can work remotely comfortably and effectively.

Catherine Gilbert, Managing Legal Counsel says; “Working on the HPC and SZC projects is the most amazing experience for a construction lawyer: you will get to work on contracts and issues that affect every aspect of the construction (and ultimately the operation) of these two mega-projects. We are a very supportive team, and we look out for each other – there is always someone to talk to and we enjoy regular team days and catch-ups including “Tea and Talk” sessions and “Coffee Roulette” as well as having close links with our external legal advisors who provide us with training, CSR and volunteering opportunities.”

At EDF, everyone’s welcome. We strive to create an inclusive and diverse environment where everyone has a voice and where you feel confident being yourself. We’re committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion. We’d like our future workforce to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+, those with a disability and supporting social mobility.

We’re a disability confident employer and we’ll do all we can to help with your application, making adjustments as you need.

We’ll value the difference you bring and offer opportunities for you to thrive and succeed.

What you’ll be doing

As a Legal Counsel (Construction) you’ll sit within our EPRP Legal team based in either London or Bristol. The work of this team supports all areas of both the HPC and SZC projects and is critical to the success of each project.

You’ll support the procurement, negotiation, and management of a wide range of contracts required for the construction, operation, and maintenance of both nuclear power stations.

You’ll work with our internal stakeholders and external advisors to advise on procurement and contracting strategies, commercial models, performance securities, insolvency risk and the avoidance of disputes.

You’ll manage complex governance arrangements and ensure alignment with the requirements of each project’s current shareholders and, in the case of SZC, future potential shareholders/investors, including the UK Government and Ofgem.

You’ll understand strategic stakeholder and funding requirements that are relevant to construction and operation of the project and translating / flowing these down into supply chain deliverables and commitments.

You’ll understand, oversee, and advise on complex IPR structures.

You’ll support the business in understanding regulatory compliance obligations and demonstrating best practice.

Who you are

Being a Legal Counsel at EDF means demonstrating excellent communication, coaching, and presentation skills, with the ability to tailor the communications style to suit a variety of audiences, including the ability to communicate complex legal concepts to a range of audiences both verbally and in writing.

You’ll have the ability to work independently, planning and managing matters in accordance with the business’s timing requirements and under the supervision of a more senior lawyer where required.

You’ll be able to build, maintain and develop strong relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders with the ability to quickly establish credibility.

You’ll be able to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, work under pressure to meet deadlines and manage work priorities accordingly, capable of working on numerous matters concurrently.

You’ll be able to demonstrate both attention to detail and the ability to provide highly pragmatic and strategic legal advice in the context of an established, commercial, operational business.

We’re looking for someone with relevant post qualification experience as a solicitor admitted in England and Wales or commonwealth jurisdiction. With the ability to demonstrate well rounded legal knowledge, commercial acumen, and experience preferably (though not necessarily) in the projects or construction sector.

Being a Legal Counsel at EDF means having an enthusiasm for all things legal, with the eagerness to really make a difference.

If this sounds like you then we’d love to hear from you!
