Legal Counsel - Commercial Legal Services

Centrica’s Legal, Regulatory, Ethics & Compliance and Secretariat (LRECS) team help to deliver Centrica's strategy and protect Centrica's interests by enabling effective, risk-based decision making. We do this by providing expert professional advice and commercially minded insight that helps the company navigate our legal, regulatory and compliance environments.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Legal Counsel - Commercial Legal Services to join our high performing Legal team and become part of our LRECS family! As a Legal Counsel - Commercial Legal Services, you will be managing the commercial and regulatory risk on a day-to-day basis and hold the ability to deliver legal services to the technology led parts of the business including Centrica Hive, Local Heroes, Centrica Innovations, Centrica Business Solutions and UK Home. This role will also support the customer facing businesses of British Gas as well as the procurement of goods and services.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of technology, consumer and commercial law in the UK. A good working knowledge of data protection and exploitation of intellectual property is beneficial.

The variety of the work means that you will be able to consistently exhibit a highly flexible and inquisitive approach to not only how you and the business deliver services, but also in your range of legal work. You’ll also have the ability to manage a diverse set of stakeholders, be able to prioritise effectively and deliver high quality commercially savvy work.

Location: We work flexibly in line with our Flexible First working arrangements believing that empowered colleagues are happier and more productive. The successful candidate will, however, need to be comfortable commuting to our Windsor office (SL4 5GD) 1-2 days per week.

About the Role:

The role is a broad commercial position with a focus on balancing the need for clear and pragmatic commercial advice while ensuring compliance with the laws and regulations governing the supply of energy, technology, digital and ecommerce services to consumers. The job holder will play an important role in the development and exploitation of Centrica’s IP and technology together with developing partnership and digital opportunities for the use of technology, digital platforms and support tools and IP through commercial arrangements including licensing, development and investment arrangements, and joint ventures and partnerships.

Key areas will include:

  • Deliver high quality, high impact, high value legal and commercial support across the business with the right balance of risk awareness and pragmatism

  • Support the businesses in managing operational and regulatory risks

  • Structuring, drafting, negotiating and facilitating non-standard contracts of major impact

  • Provide advice to senior stakeholders on key business decisions, policy and customer journeys, with a key focus on technology, digital and ecommerce

  • Procuring advice and support from the wider LRECS team on any other legal or regulatory matters that arise

  • Keeping informed of industry-specific laws and regulations and ensuring that appropriate risk management strategies are in place

  • Instructing and managing external lawyers and third parties where appropriate to ensure appropriate and cost-effective advice is provided to the business

  • Developing strong stakeholder relationships and networks within the function and the other business units to support the delivery of objectives and the management of risk

  • Supporting the legal team objectives, including involvement in projects to improve team performance, management and talent development

About You:

  • Highly strategic legal outlook and commercially savvy lawyer with experience of delivering successfully in a challenging, fast paced environment, preferably in-house

  • Experience of building strong relationships with senior business leaders in challenging environments

  • Experience of drafting contracts and negotiating commercial and technology agreements with a range of complexity

  • Demonstrable ability to assess risk and deliver advice in a pragmatic manner, taking into account the wider and regulatory framework and commercial drivers

  • Significant business facing experience in a legal role dealing with complex, high profile and important legal matters

  • Experience of working within a complex and fast paced organisation and demonstrable ability to adapt and continuously learn
