Legal Counsel:
Bechtel is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to join the growing Energy Global Business Unit (GBU).
The Legal Counsel acts as an advisor to internal clients on legal issues affecting Bechtel activities, conducts analysis of contracts and other documents for the GBU, function, or service. Summary
The role of the Legal Counsel is to act as an advisor to internal clients on legal issues affecting Bechtel activities. Areas of legal support may include contract analysis, negotiations and preparation; government and regulatory compliance; litigation; claims management; corporate law; and labour and employment law. The legal work is typically difficult by reason of one or more of the following: absence of clear and directly applicable legal precedents; different possible interpretations that can be placed on the facts, the laws, or the precedents involved; substantial importance of legal matters to the organization. The Legal Counsel will also manage outside counsel performing legal services for Bechtel.
Key Responsibilities:
- Independently investigates facts, researches legal precedents, defines legal and factual issues, drafts necessary legal documents and develops conclusions and recommendations. Reviews decisions having an important bearing on the organization’s business.
- Reviews or prepares contracts, subcontracts, proposals, and other legal documents.
- Negotiates legal provisions of contracts with clients, subcontractors and vendors.
- Provides interpretation and analysis of contracts and other documents for a global business unit (GBU), function, or service organization.
- May have primary day-to-day responsibility for legal services provided to major organizations.
- Prepares standard terms for documents used on a repeated basis such as purchase orders and subcontracts.
- Provides legal counsel regarding government and regulatory compliance.
- Manages or assists with the handling and settlement of suits, charges, claims work and as necessary with outside legal counsel.
- Manages or assists with administrative litigation, employment and labour relations, and occupational and health work.
- Performs special functions in coordinating the formation of international contracts with particular emphasis upon achieving proper communications between national and international counsel.
Essential Skills and Qualifications:
- Broad knowledge and demonstrated experience in legal subject matter areas.
- Broad knowledge of corporate activities and related industry legal concepts, obligations, and regulations.
- Broad knowledge of engineering and construction work processes and ability to adapt legal concepts to suit the Bechtel environment.
- Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), Juris Doctor (JD) degree, or international equivalent.
- Active membership in the applicable bar association, where required.
Desirable experience:
- Fluency in foreign languages (including Arabic) would be favourably considered.
- Experience generally with projects/prospects in the Infrastructure or ET sector.
