Job description

Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Games Design

Job description
Background

Applications are invited for the post of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Games Design. Our teaching team brings together a range of expertise and experience in games and adjacent creative media, ranging from the theoretical and academic, to the practical and professional.

Our approach to staffing on our BA (and MA course) is to match staff to modules according to their personal strengths and skillsets. As such, we expect applicants to have expertise in at least one key area of game design and development, but we are flexible about what this key area of expertise might be. We are a software agnostic course, encouraging students to use multiple development environments (and design digital and non-digital games), and seek applicants with practical expertise and the ability to communicate these skills to students so that they can realise their creative ambitions.

Examples of ideal applicant backgrounds would include;

  • A games industry experienced developers with expertise in project development, team management, and a 3D or 2D game engine.
  • A specialist in 2D game development in Unity and/or Game Maker, with some experience in level design and basic animation.
  • A specialist in 3D game development in Unity and/or Unreal Engine, with some experience in basic 3D modelling and animation.
  • A specialist in VR/AR development in Unity and/or Unreal Engine, with some experience in motion capture and/or photogrammetry.
  • An applicant with a background in design-adjacent roles including production, QA, community management, or narrative design.
  • An applicant with expertise in board game and/or tabletop game design and development, production, and management.

This list is by no means exhaustive, we welcome applicants with divergent skillsets and experience. For us the priority is that applicants can constructively support students to make games, join a diverse and committed academic team, and help shape the future development of the Games Design courses.

Our teaching team is already strong by virtue of its diversity; mixing cultural historians and practicing designers and artists, and as such, we welcome applications from a range of academic and professional backgrounds.

The post is located in the School of Creative Arts and Industries, which has an excellent quality rating and a tradition of integrating practice and theory with creativity and professionalism. This new role would be ideal for someone looking to expand on an existing career as a games educator, or for someone with professional experience in art, production, or narrative for games, who is looking for a route into teaching. We seek someone who is passionate about making and playing games, and who wants to become an important member of a small and ambitious academic team.

The Role

Responsible to the Head of School you will teach modules related to games design and production; engage in research and/or enterprise; and undertake administrative and pastoral duties as required.

Requirements

You will have a good honours degree in a relevant subject and relevant experience in game development (either professionally or as a seasoned amateur/hobbyist). A higher degree in a relevant subject or professional seniority would be advantageous. Experience in teaching is necessary, ideally within an HE or FE context, however industry training or support would be considered relevant. It is essential that you have experience of collaborative production of games; knowledge of the creative processes within games design, and how this applies to a specialist technical area. Experience of using appropriate software for game development would be advantageous (the course currently delivers modules using Game Maker Studio, Unity, Unreal Engine, and Ren’Py, although applicants will be encouraged to teach the platforms, they are most capable in). You will also have knowledge of the UK (and/or international) games industry from an indie and creatively focussed perspective. An ability to motivate and enthuse diverse groups of students and work independently and as part of a small team is essential.
