Open Ended Contract - Permanent: Part Time - 28 Hours per Week

The Edinburgh College of Art is seeking an enthusiastic and pro-active individual for the post of Lecturer in Performance Costume.

The Opportunity:

The post has a focus on and responsibility for, a significant proportion of the teaching of Undergraduate Performance Costume students. Alongside this, the postholder will be expected to contribute where appropriate to broader cross-disciplinary teaching, relevant to performance costume.

The post involves designing course content, and teaching delivery towards creative and contemporary performance costume practices. This includes teaching specialisms such as costume design, contemporary pattern cutting, costume draping, historical pattern cutting, dress histories and historical tailoring skills.

Additionally, you will be expected to support the development and embedding of new and emerging technologies and practices relating to costume pattern cutting, design costume dissemination in an educational context.

The post also involves the production of high-quality research, funding generation and knowledge exchange activities, of national and ideally international impact in the field of performance costume for stage, screens and moving image.

The School of Design places a strong focus on encouraging socially responsible design practices that address equalities, inclusion, ability, and well-being. You will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of this important subject in relation to ongoing needs in Performance Costume, including leading in decolonizing curriculum content, course delivery and teaching methods.

The post involves supporting the School’s ongoing vision to embed sustainable and environmentally considerate design practices and solutions at the core of teaching and ongoing curriculum development.

You will also contribute to leadership, management, citizenship and administrative duties across teaching and research activities, commensurate with the role.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • You will evidence strong creative and technical ability in Costume Design and Pattern Cutting, with experience of working as a performance costume pattern cutter and designer within an industry context/setting.
  • You will be expected to have knowledge and expertise in teaching Performance Costume Design in an educational setting.
  • You will have the ability to teach contemporary pattern cutting, costume draping, historical pattern cutting, & tailoring methods.
  • You will have the ability to teach and support students in creative pattern cutting methods for costume.
  • You will have an acute understanding of the broader industry contexts of Performance Costume, including good knowledge of the innovation-led approaches to costume design.
  • You will demonstrate experience in promoting equalities, diversity and inclusion within a teaching and learning context.
  • You will understand how to embed socially conscious, ethical and sustainable materials and practices into your teaching methods.
