The role

The School of Geographical Sciences at the University of Bristol is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Environmental Data Science. The School of Geographical Sciences has a long and established reputation in computationally intensive geographical research spanning from climate modelling, flood risk detection to election prediction and urban growth. The successful applicant will join the School’s Modelling and Geocomputation Research Strand, expanding its capacity for research and teaching in environmental data science. They will contribute to our new MSc programmes in Geographic Data Science and Data Analytics as well as Environmental Modelling and Data Analysis. We are particularly interested in candidates whose expertise includes, among other things, machine learning (particularly deep learning), Earth observation and satellite imagery.

What will you be doing?

This appointment will build on the School’s strengths in quantitative geography, spatial modelling and environmental modelling, and will further expand its current capabilities in environmental data science.

The successful candidate will have an established expertise and research trajectory in using and/or developing state of the art methods within the broader environmental data science domain.

The successful candidate will contribute to:

  • The School’s growing MSc programmes in Geographic Data Science and Spatial Analytics and Environmental Modelling and Data Analysis.
  • Develop collaborations and research outputs as well as develop capacity to lead research grant applications to appropriate funders within a highly supportive institutional environment which includes the Research Groupings within the school.
  • Guide students (undergraduate and postgraduate) in their research dissertations
  • Provide appropriate pastoral tutorial support to students through their time in the school.
  • Participate in field courses and instruction.

You should apply if

  • You are a passionate and dedicated educator.
  • You have a good degree and have completed (or are close to completion of) a PhD in a relevant subject
  • You have an excellent track record of publications and funding commensurate with an appointment at the level advertised.
