Job description

Department

History of Art at York is one of the largest and most dynamic communities of art historians in the UK, with eighteen colleagues who cover all periods from late antiquity to the present. The department ranked first in the UK for Environment and Impact in the recent Research Excellence Framework (2021), and in the top 10 overall. We teach approximately 180 undergraduate, 40 Masters, and 80 PhD students, who follow a broad range of programmes, including our BA in Curating and Art History, which has grown consistently since its launch in 2017. The programme introduces students to a wide range of curatorial practices and approaches, and is distinguished by a curatorial placement for every student, and a group exhibition project that draws on the University of York Art Collection. Teaching in the department is supported by a friendly atmosphere, small-group teaching methods, regular study trips, and spectacular historic locations. The department has initiated innovative partnerships with museums, galleries, and heritage organisations, which are coordinated through York Art History Collaborations.

We seek a Lecturer in Art Curating, with an active current and future profile of curatorial activity and/or exhibition-making. Drawing on your professional expertise, you will play a leading role in the future development of our BA in Curating and Art History, and in the creation of new postgraduate modules and programmes in Art Curating. You will work closely with our existing museum and gallery partners, and nurture new student-focussed collaborations in the sector.

  • You will have a PhD in History of Art or equivalent professional experience
  • You will have specialist knowledge of curating and/or exhibition histories
  • You will have significant experience as a curator
  • You will have an appropriate academic teaching qualification or a willingness to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice
  • You will be able to design and deliver teaching material across a range of modules and programmes and demonstrate evidence of successful teaching and supervision within a Higher Education environment
  • You will have highly developed oral and written communication skills
  • You will have a commitment to high quality, and be able to display creativity, initiative, and judgement
  • You will demonstrate a collaborative approach
  • You will show commitment through the undertaking of administration duties
