Job description
Edinburgh Napier University’s award-winning School of Arts & Creative Industries (SACI) hosts a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and plays an active part in the creative industries across Scotland.
Currently ranking as a top 3 UK modern university for Film Production & Photography (3rd of 67) in The Guardian University Guide 2023, we are committed to creating a positive, empowering, and inclusive environment for teaching, learning, and scholarship for our students and staff alike.
Our staff are deeply committed to helping our students become young professionals – mature in their thinking, fresh in their approach to their subject areas and people who would like to use their creativity to bring about societal changes. Correspondingly, our staff are deeply committed individuals, very collaborative with great links into industry.
As part of our ongoing initiative to provide a comprehensive support service to the Screen & Performing Arts subject area, we are currently recruiting a part-time Lecturer in Film Editing to join the team and assist us in maintaining our position as one of the top institutions for creative industries in UK Higher Education, by delivering high quality, student-centred teaching and high-quality research.
The Role:
Screen and Performing Arts is made up of a diverse, vibrant group of subject areas that cover film and television, music, acting and performing arts.
The position of Lecturer in Film Editing primarily involves teaching professional editing practices for both drama and documentary filmmaking and you will be in an excellent position to use your strong background as an editor in the film and television industry to pass on valuable skills to our students.
The role will also give you the opportunity to use your high-level experience of developing, designing and delivering teaching, to contribute to the delivery of our successful undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Film and Television production.
Your commitment to student-centred learning and supporting/developing new learners will also stand you in good stead, as you act as Personal Tutor for students and supervise practical work at undergraduate and postgraduate level, as appropriate.
As we are an Avid Learning Partner, we do expect that you will also be utilising an advanced knowledge of Avid Media Composer, as well as a proficiency in other post-production software, given the ever-evolving nature of post-production workflows.
What we will need from you:
We would like to speak to individuals with professional expertise in editing for film and television.
You will need to be comfortable working across drama, documentary and hybrid formats, and we seek candidates whose research and teaching take innovative approaches to teaching narrative form.
Further to this, the following criteria are essential:
- Relevant experience equivalent to doctoral level study in producing for film or television.
- Evidence of relevant teaching experience.
- A commitment to sustained continuous professional and academic development
- Willingness to maintain and establish links with media industries
- Knowledge of industry standards and regulations.
- Collegiate in approach: We are looking for a colleague with the enthusiasm required to contribute to and lead on the teaching of editing, in order to successfully develop the next generation of film makers. You must be equally comfortable working independently as you are collaborating as part of our successful film education team.
