Lead ML-Ops Engineer

In a nutshell

We are looking for someone who is ready to step up into a lead engineer role. You'll lead a newly established ML-Ops team within Sainsbury’s Bank. Reporting to the Head of Data Science you will working closely with data scientists to build and maintain a variety of data products as well developing out our modelling infrastructure roadmap focusing on the CI/CD of machine learning models within their lifecycle as well as other bespoke data product solutions. You will be leading and mentoring a small team of junior ML cloud engineers to deliver AWS cloud-based solutions that will help drive tangible value for the Bank.

What you need to do

• Working closely with the Head of Data Science to develop the combined data science and ML-Ops strategy/roadmap.
• Liaising with the broader engineering community to share best practices and present new and ongoing work.
• Building a close relationship with the Data Science team to understand requirements and the use cases for the platform and prioritise work accordingly.
• Working with and building relationships across the Bank e.g. Architecture, Info-sec, IT-sec, and design appropriate solutions in line with Bank governance.
• Developing data-centric applications.
• Creating and maintaining design documents for our data products.
• Write excellent code adhering to coding and commenting standards while following best practice
• Take a test driven and behaviour driven development approach when writing code (use TDD and BDD) and instil to others in the team
• Coaching/mentoring/upskilling junior members of the team.
• Building relationships with key stakeholders in the Bank.
• Assisting the data science team to evaluate new tools e.g. AWS service and third party
• Working in Agile approach.
• Work collaboratively and be an active contributor to continuous improvement within a team providing honest and open feedback based on your experience.
• Integrating modelling code with application frameworks in a repeatable and testable way
• Defining and maintaining coding standards to ensure best practice.
• Develop Proof of Concept activities that will demonstrate the feasibility of the Innovation Proposal and associated success criteria.

What you need to know and show

• Designing and implementing Python-based backend services.
• Advanced expertise in software engineering principles, practices, and tooling e.g., clean coding, testing, source control.
• Terraform, python, aws, git, spark, SAM, glue, step functions, lambda, CDK, bash, linux
• Advanced knowledge of implementing linux containers e.g. Docker
• Familiarity with VPC, IAM roles, network firewalls within AWS.
• Understanding of basic machine learning model development life cycle principles e.g. development to production.
• Advanced understanding and experience of Object-Oriented programming and its advantages and disadvantages in large scale applications.
• Understanding and experience of Unit testing.
• Advanced understanding and experience of Version control systems such as GIT and Continuous Integration pipelines and why we use them
• Advanced understanding and experience of framework agnostic development, knowing when to use frameworks and when not to.
• Experience in leading technical teams.
• Maintain an up-to-date understanding of the main knowledge base, and a general understanding of the other technology which together form the overall technical direction.
• Experience working in a DevOps/DataOps culture and with the effective use of CI/CD tools (we currently use Gitlab and AWS CodePipeline, but this may change)
• Experience working in a data-focused environment.
• Proven ability to deliver flexible, reliable, supportable, cost effective (packaged and bespoke) solutions in Agile environments.
• Appreciation of data science/ML concepts is a plus but not a core responsibility
• Ability to quickly gain the confidence of the business and colleagues through good communication and influencing skills, simplifying complex technical messages.
