Job Description
Electra is seeking an Avionics/Electrical Engineer to support the development and testing of avionics and electrical systems of our hybrid-electric aircraft. This position focuses on design, prototyping, integration, and testing and as such is nominally based in Manassas, Virginia.
Responsibilities & Essential Functions
- Work towards electrically integrating all relevant aircraft systems and components: aircraft avionics (computing), effector controls, flight telemetry, power generation, electric propulsion, battery monitoring and control.
- Understand program objectives and requirements to conduct trade studies and define architectures, requirements, and interfaces between systems.
- Select and interface with suppliers and provide technical input (mass, performance, risk) to the program team to support selection.
- Prepare and present at gated design reviews to demonstrate the adequacy of the design.
Qualifications & Required Skills
Required:
- 5+ years experience in relevant discipline areas.
- Experience with the aircraft development process and familiarity with aircraft systems.
- Hands-on experience with avionics and aircraft electrical systems.
- Proven experience with designing, fabricating, integrating, and testing wire harnesses.
- Hands-on experience with integrating actuators, sensors, and computing platforms.
- Experience with implementing and troubleshooting digital communications architectures (i.e. RS422, CAN, Ethernet, and ARINC429).
- Proficient with general-purpose test and build equipment/tools (oscilloscope, multimeter, soldering iron).
- A strong work ethic and ability to independently meet and lead the areas described by the responsibilities and essential functions.
- Quick and positive response to change, ability to multitask. Focus on the output rather than the number of hours spent at work. Willingness to work across time zones.
Desired:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related discipline preferred; advanced degree in a related discipline is an plus.
- Experience with grounding schemes for large and complex electrical systems.
- Experience with troubleshooting electromagnetic interference issues (EMI).
- Experience with troubleshooting and designing PCBs.
- Experience in embedded programming, C/C++ and Linux systems.
- Experience with standard general aviation instrumentation/flight decks (i.e. Garmin/Avidyne).
- Experience with FAA experimental airworthiness and Part 23 aircraft certification.
- Public health conditions permitting, the job may involve periods of domestic and international travel to support suppliers and integration/flight test.
