What can I expect to do in this role?
In this role, you will:- carry out comprehensive title searches to establish legal descriptions, property ownership, municipal boundaries, distances and easements to assist in preparing instructions for the drafting of Zoning Orders and reference maps
- provide litigation support for Ontario Land Tribunal hearings under the Planning Act
- research statues and case law in preparation for proposed legislation, prosecutions and administrative hearings
- respond to requests under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act
How do I qualify?
Specialized Knowledge
You have:- the ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation and statutes (example: Land Titles Act, Registry Act, Planning Act, Land Registration Reform Act)
- knowledge of relevant information systems (example: Geographic Information System (GIS) and Teranet) to investigate land information, prepare maps and legal descriptions, establish boundaries, establish ownership and register documents
- knowledge of legal formats and terminology to conduct research and draft legal documents
- knowledge of legal office methods, procedures and related practices to provide administrative and legal research support to counsel
Research, Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills
You have:- research skills to conduct legal research using electronic resources (example: GIS, Teranet, Quick Law, West Law), law libraries and other resources, conduct corporate searches, execute property and real estate title searches
- analytical skills to interpret policy and procedures, determine relevancy of legal issues, identify unresolved issues, review requests and determine completeness and accuracy
- reasoning and problem -solving skills to develop strategies, identify unresolved issues and advise clients
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
You have:- excellent oral communication skills to prepare reports, correspondence, convey recommendations and interact with legal staff and management
- exceptional written communication skills to prepare legal documents, compose correspondence and reports
- proven ability to apply strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with individuals of all levels
- leadership skills to provide direction, orientation and training to students and business professionals
Organizational Skills
You have:- the ability to plan, organize and coordinate work
- the ability to manage priorities and work as a member of a team
