The Operations department have a new opportunity for a Lapping Operator to join our team in the Lapping shop based in Slough. This is where the magic happens, where we produce Gas & Wet Seal components by using various lapping processes and other manufacturing methods. You will operate a wide range of high precision machinery, such as Lapping plates, Polishing plates, Laser machines, Grit blasting and Spin Rigs.
Full training will be given and if you can learn how to use these on high precision machinery and tools, you will flourish in other departments of John Crane.
Duties & Responsibilities
The Lapping Operator will carry out the following activities:
- Lapping and polishing of various components - Operating a range of Lapping plates to produce a level of flatness or curvature to the required specification - Responsible for polishing components to a high surface finish and checking parts are free from any imperfections.
- Hand lapping of components - Using tools provided to lap a flat surface onto components.
- Masking/Grooving of Mating Rings - Using a PC to enter data to produce a mask that is used to cover the part and only leaves areas exposed that are to be grooved - Cut spiral grooves onto Mating Rings using grit blasting machine - Operating the Laser machine to produce required spiral groove.
- Optical and mechanical inspection - Conduct visual inspections - Using optical flats to check the correct curvature has been applied - Use of Interferometer to measure flatness and curvature.
- Spin testing of grooved Mating Rings Using fixtures provided to test parts on spin rig.

The Individual
The Lapping Operator will demonstrate and possess the following:
- The right technical mindset to be taught this pragmatic process
- Previous experience working with machinery, tools, metalwork etc.
- Experience reading technical drawings.
- A background working in a manufacturing, factory or warehouse setting.
- Good attention to detail with the ability to multi-task
- IT and computer literate
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work as part of a team in the Lapping shop
- Ability to communicate with other departments across Operations.
