Job description
As a Survey technician at Hogan Land Services, you will operate survey instruments and computer equipment to measure distance, angles, elevations, and contours. They use this information to establish geographical locations and boundaries. Receives direct and general supervision from the Survey Department Manager with no supervision of staff.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Field surveying
- Downloading/uploading survey field data in AutoCAD
- Processing of field survey data
- Land record research
- AutoCAD drafting
- Property Research
- Field calculations
- Drafting of maps and legal descriptions
- Interprets and plots record deeds and plats for all types of property surveys
- Prepares all types of surveying plats and exhibit drawings utilizing research and the information gathered in the field
- Performs stakeout calculations for construction sites
- Prepares documents including Topographic maps, ALTA surveys, Boundary surveys
- May perform other duties as assigned
Required Skills and Abilities
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Work well in a team environment and perform assigned duties independently
- Have the ability to communicate effectively with clients, consultants, and project team members
- Highly motivated, articulate, and self-starting
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.), Outlook, and use of Computer-Aided Design software (AutoCAD, etc.)
Education and/or experience
At least 1 year of AutoCad experience with some college-level land surveying education or land surveying-related work experience or a combination of both
Physical Requirements
Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer, printer, fax, phone; to occasionally operate a motor vehicle; vision to read printed materials and computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Survey Technicians lift and carry equipment, drive stakes into the ground, and walk for long periods of time, all of which requires physical fitness. The position requires a capacity for strenuous physical effort such as walking and climbing over steep terrain. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
Work Environment
Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may work in the field and occasionally be exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Field work is sometimes performed in a physical environment where the terrain may be steep, uneven, rocky and covered with thick tangled vegetation. Employees may occasionally interact with frustrated clients, neighbors, or public agencies.

Hogan Land Services proudly serves California from 3 locations: Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, and Livermore. We are a well-established firm seeking an experienced Survey Tech for our team.
We offer a competitive benefits package including profit sharing, health benefits, retirement plan, paid holidays, and Alternative Work Schedules, Five 9-hour days one calendar week and Four days in the other calendar week. Eight of the shifts are nine hours and one is eight hours, with every other Friday off.
