Job description

My client has built up a market-leading pipeline of Energy Park projects in Wales, constituting the largest on shore renewable development portfolio in the UK. The businesses’ Energy Parks will combine the latest technology for onshore wind and solar generation to provide projects with some of the lowest Levelised Cost of Energy in the UK.

With the first planning applications being readied for submission in 2022, My client is growing its existing and experienced team to lead the business through the next stages of consenting and delivery.

The business is now looking to appoint a Land Manager. This is an enormously exciting opportunity to join a high growth business and play a key role in its continued success.

Job Title: Land Manager

Location: Wales

Reports to: Senior Land Manager, but also working as part of and supporting a central Land management team.

Main Responsibilities

  • Working as part of the Grid team, secure all land rights for new electrical over head lines (OHL’s) and underground cable (UGC) infrastructure in Wales, including online and offline elements
  • Positively engage with other project managers, designers, support staff and directors to ensure that strategically important programme milestones are achieved, with risks and issues identified and mitigated at an early stage.
  • Provide strategic leadership and guidance on development of land acquisition strategy including identification of opportunities to outperform milestones.
  • Lead on arranging access to land for non-intrusive and intrusive environmental and engineering surveys as required for the development of the new OHL’s.
  • Where necessary, secure option agreements to acquire materially affected dwellings.
  • Produce and maintain an accurate database covering landowner/ occupier contacts, such that where necessary it will achieve a positive outcome through a CPO process.
  • Manage, lead and direct a team of externally appointed land surveyors and agents that will engage directly with landowners and occupiers on behalf of my client to achieve necessary agreements.
  • Act as an expert and client representative and ensure that contractors work to the relevant timescale, quality and commercial standards whilst ensuring that the clients high customer standards are maintained.
  • Maintain accurate land-related budgets for all commercial discussions and report directly to Finance Department to ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Lead on relationship and management of my clients external professional support team of Solicitors, Land agents, etc.•
  • Own strategically important relationships with key stakeholders, taking proactive steps to positively influence discussions. Provide and support escalation process for challenging engagements.

Experience & Background

  • The ideal candidate will have the following personal characteristics and experience:
  • An experienced and appropriately qualified professional (RICS or similar) with a proven track record of success within a similarly challenging role. Energy sector experience is not an essential requirement but is a clear advantage.
  • Comprehensive understanding of farming and land management practice is essential.
  • Experience of leading commercial negotiations with internal and external parties.
  • Experience of leading, managing and directing 3rd party suppliers.
  • Experience of preparing CPO documentation and acting as expert witness during hearing process and planning examination
  • Experience in presenting to a Board, building their confidence in the land function, and processes/controls.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management skills with the ability to drive business initiatives forward and to embrace change, efficiencies, and new innovations.
  • Strong commercial acumen with the skills to lead on commercial contracts and negotiations.
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with landowners to further interests
  • A good strategic thinker who can assesses situations quickly and will resolve issues confidently and decisively.
  • Able to function well within an entrepreneurial team environment whilst at the same time fostering a team culture
  • Experience of successfully managing a small team
  • Highly numerate with strong analytical skills.
  • Intellectually curious with a broad business skillset.
  • Resilient: remains calm and effective under pressure.
  • A proactive self-starter.
  • Someone who is passionate, determined and who is looking for an opportunity to make their mark.
  • Demonstrable track record of experience and success in the Welsh market
  • Willingness to travel to sites throughout Wales on a weekly basis.
  • Welsh language skills would be useful but are not essential.
  • Clean driving licence.

  • A highly motivated individual with the ability to self-manage engagement and relationships with a wide range of counterparties.
  • A requirement to be able to handle a large and dynamic workload, as well as internal and external support in execution of business objectives.
  • A requirement to be a self-starter with an ability to manage their own workload, whilst committing to spend a large amount of traveling and interacting with key land stakeholders.

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: £60,000.00-£75,000.00 per year
