We currently have a unique opportunity for a Lactation Consultant within the Tongue tie team at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. We are looking for a motivated and dynamic individual with enthusiasm for caring for mothers and their babies to support breastfeeding.
The successful candidate will provide support to the Tongue tie clinic by assisting the surgeon during the assessment and frenulotomy procedure. The individual will also lead assessments and undertake training to independently perform frenulotomy procedures.
The vacancy is for one day a week (Mondays 9 am till 4 pm).

To support the Tongue tie clinics by assisting the surgeon during the assessment and surgical procedure to divide tongue tie in surgeon led clinics. To undertake training to assess patients and perform frenulotomy in Lactation Consultant led clinics.
To ensure the smooth running of clinics and to ensure a safe environment for patients and parents; including responsibility for ensuring that clinics are adequately resourced with equipment and clinical supplies.
In conjunction with the Team Leader, to be responsible for revision and formulation of new practice protocols, research and audit.
To liaise with Paediatric Surgical secretarial staff in relation to bookings and administration for the clinic.
To deputise for the Lactation Consultant Team Leader in their absence.
To comply to Infection Prevention and Control and local policies.

Clinical responsibilities
- To assess the infant feeding and well-being needs of women and babies during their attendance at Tongue tie Clinic.
- To plan, deliver and evaluate a high standard of evidence based care for women and babies attending the Tongue tie Clinic.
- To promote the equality and rights of all mothers and babies attending Tongue tie Clinic, their families and all colleagues by actions that support diversity, being non-judgmental and challenging discriminatory behaviour in others.
- To work in partnership with the mother, her baby and family, and with other disciplines and agencies involved in her care.
- To promote best practice in health, safety and security of self and others.
- To regularly be the Lactation Consultant in charge of the Tongue tie clinic and to deputise for the Team Leader in their absence.
- Delegating work to others as appropriate, providing specialist care to those mothers with complex breastfeeding difficulties.
- Offering skilled clinical leadership to all grades including junior medical staff and co-ordinating the work of all professions.
- To play an active part and to co-operate fully in any research project undertaken by the service.
- To contribute to the development of services, keeping abreast of current trends relevant to the treatment of Tongue tie, Breastfeeding, Maternal and Infant Health and Nutrition and Lactation management.
- To motivate and encourage team members to put forward ideas that will improve care and services.
- To continuously evaluate own knowledge and practice, address areas of interest and make effective use of learning opportunities, applying learning to the development of the service. To comply with attendance of statutory mandatory training.
- To take part in the maintenance of the Tongue tie clinic environment ensuring the unit is clean and well stocked and that all equipment is functioning correctly. To maintain stock levels and to order stock and non stock items as required.
- To take responsibility for the safe use of equipment in the clinic, to assess competencies of team members and maternity support workers in the safe use of equipment.
- To ensure all documentation of cases, both written and electronic is of the highest standard.
- To comply with Information Governance policy in regards to documentation and storage of clinical notes.
