Job description
The department are seeking an experienced member of the team to provide technical and administrative support to ensure the smooth running, safety and security of the Department of Earth Sciences Palaeontological and Sedimentological Laboratories.
This area comprises of (1) a (chemical) preparation laboratory with fume extraction and sample washing and drying facilities, (2) optical light microscope area with research grade microscopes and imaging facilities.
The postholder will have responsibility of managing the smooth day to day running, safety and security of the Paleontological and Sedimentological laboratories, ensure that all microscopes are well maintained and serviced annually and that any repairs needed are undertaken in a reasonable timeframe. The postholder will also plan and prioritise work in the laboratory or arrange for the work to be outsourced to a third part as appropriate. They will also manage the budget for the Palaeontological and Sedimentological laboratories producing monthly reports, reporting usage to the finance team and monitoring the budget.
The postholder will be expected to provide training to departmental users in the proper use of equipment and laboratory techniques and support, maintain and update their knowledge and techniques – attending appropriate training courses and conferences as required. The postholder will also be expected to promote and publicise the services of the laboratories within the department and wider University and external clients to generate income.
The postholder should be educated to an appropriate level in a relevant subject (Laboratory Management of Practice), significant experience of delivering technical support in the Earth Sciences or a similar discipline, experience and knowledge of working with optical and/or electron microscopes – particularly petrographic microscopes. The post holder will have: the ability to liaise with both students and senior members of the department; the technical capacity to deliver excellent service; and the ability to work independently to plan and to provide leadership in a technical environment. The postholder should also have strong attention to detail, the ability to troubleshoot problems with experiments and knowledge of health and safety regulations in a laboratory environment.
This role is permanent upon successful completion of a one-year probationary period.
