About the Role:
Our testing laboratories in Hemel Hempstead & Loughborough play an important role in making sure products pass strict safety standards prior to market access, ensuring the highest confidence to consumers.
We have fantastic opportunity for a new Global Laboratory Manager to be based within our Life Protection stream at our Hemel Hempstead Laboratory, that are responsible for testing a wide range of products across fire suppression and PPE.
As our Global Laboratory Manager for the Life Protection stream, you’ll manage 3 direct reports with a total staff headcount of circa 40 people.
You’ll be tasked with the effective management of department resources ensuring service delivery and operational excellence across the laboratories in line with budget and ensuring we always meet the highest level of employee engagement and customer satisfaction.
The position will take on a global perspective across IMETA, APAC, EMEA and the AMERICAS where you will be working with our Lab Partners in globalising and implementing testing standards and processes.
You will also take a key role in the implementation of new testing work and capabilities from cradle to grave, ensuring we always maintain highest quality and efficiency.
Key Duties:
  • To manage the delivery of an effective and efficient testing facility in a way that consistently enhances BSI’s reputation for service excellence.
  • Coach, lead and motivate the technical Team Managers in their day-to-day operational activities and associated resourcing and administration for the business to ensure accurate and timely forecasts are made and budget revenues and costs are achieved.
  • Drive BSI need to Globalise our offering working with Regional Heads to continually improve our service quality and delivery within testing, whilst supporting the possibility of allowing new innovations to be onboarded.
  • Develop, monitor and report on KPIs for the business, with focus on customer service, growth & operational efficiencies.
  • Lead by example demonstrating high quality people management practices that drive high employee engagement, including regular and effective coaching practices and employee recognition that inspires individuals to go above and beyond.
  • Drive improvements in performance management to ensure BSI employees have the appropriate skill, knowledge and attitudes to carry out their responsibilities effectively.
  • Ensure effective recruitment, on-boarding and succession planning is in place to support future delivery and drive effective people development and retention.
  • Ensure teams full compliance with health & safety policies, working time regulations and all relevant BSI policies.
  • Manage the provision of equipment and services for the operations and act as an interface into BSI Facilities and Health and Safety on matters which directly affect the laboratory facility.
  • Lead & collaborate with sister locations & teams to deliver best in class service and support to drive growth and new product innovation within sector.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
  • Degree or equivalent in an engineering discipline.
  • Previous experience within a laboratory environment and testing protocols.
  • Operations Management Expertise
  • Strong people management skills to deal with the range of day-to-day employee issues, as well as coach and facilitate the on-going development of employees.
  • Proven ability to effectively manage the performance of multi-disciplined / technical teams, managing employees and processes to meet expectations.
  • Able to demonstrate a customer-centric approach with evidence of a strong customer service ethic and proven ability to drive improved customer focus through teams.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • First class organisation skills with ability to plan personal workload and work within the bounds of both short and long-term plans
  • Self-motivated, results orientated individual able to work without supervision
  • Experience with product certification and testing concepts, principles and processes, including internal auditing, accreditation and competence
Desirable Skills & Experience:
  • Extensive experience in testing techniques used in BSI or similar laboratories. Including in depth knowledge of the quality requirements detailed in relative international good-practice documents (such as ISO 17025).
  • Individual should have experience or appetite for promoting continual improvement & a Lean culture.
